MATCH REPORT: Last gasp try give Bulldogs win over Canberra Raiders in Jersey Flegg

The Canterbury Bulldogs have surged late in the dying moments to secure a 18-15 win over the Canberra Raiders at Belmore Sports Ground.

The game swung when Raiders were attacking deep into the Bulldog's half. With the game in the balance, it was Thomas Casey who stepped up to slot a field goal from 30m out with 5 minutes to go. But it was the home side who would have the last say. Left centre Larson Doyle stealing the match at the death, crashing over from 10m out to pinch the fixture with only seconds remaining.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Canterbury Bulldogs at Belmore Oval on Saturday evening. The Raiders led for much of the match, and took a 15-14 lead with five minutes remaining - thanks to a Thomas Casey 30 metre field goal. But Bulldogs centre Larson Doyle charged over from 10 metres out in the final minute, giving the home team a last gasp, 18-15 victory.

The Raiders went to a 10-0 lead after just 10 minutes. Centre Josh Billing was the first to score, taking advantage of a cross field kick In the seventh minute. Winger Steven Numambo crossed in the corner just three minutes later. The Bulldogs struck back just before the break through winger Samuel Kannan, ensuring the Dogs trailed by just six points at half time.

Canberra winger Temple Beauchamp delivered a 14-4 lead to the visitors, scoring in the first minute of the second half. But then the Bulldogs came back. A converted try to Joash Papali'i in the 59th minute levelled the game at 14 all. And that set the match up for the dramatics of the final five minutes.

It is a good, old fashioned triple header at Canberra Stadium in Round 3, with the program starting with the Jersey Flegg clash between the Raiders and Tigers. After the opening two rounds, the Raiders are winless and sit close to the bottom of the ladder. The Tigers are also yet to win a game. They're coming off a 22-10 loss to the Knights on Monday. They also lost to the Victoria Thunderbolts, 30-20, at Camden in Round 1. Canberra will no doubt be desperate for their first win on the big stage at Bruce.

These two teams last met in 2019 in this grade, with the Tigers producing a 22-0 win at Campbelltown Stadium. It was a bit of a lesson for the young Raiders - and they turned it around in Round 18, winning 38-6 at Canberra Stadium. The outside backs delivered four of the seven tries, with winger Manase Kaho getting a double. Current first graders Harley Smith-Shields, Matt Timoko and Semi Valemei also crossed.

Team news: Tate Rhea will play his first game in green in the second row. He's come through the Ipswich Jets and was their Colts Rookie of the Year in 2021. Caleb Tohi comes into the starting team at lock, with Mitch Prest and Kaden Williams both dropping to the bench. It is also Tohi's first game in green, with the young forward coming though the Parramatta Eels juniors.

4th min TRY RAIDERS to halfback Sione Moala! Individual run from about 10 metres out. Not much defence there. Converted by Mitch Spencer, not far from the posts.

Expect the idea is to get him some big minutes in Flegg, rather than bench minutes in NSW Cup.

Gee that was poor. We put in a really good set after points, Casey kicks far too big so we let them start at the 20, give away a needless penalty, March them down and then let them score.

Need to be better than that.

11th min TRY TIGERS in the corner to winger Jake Hirst. The pass looked forward from right in line, it’s off the back of a repeat set. Conversion fails, hits the post.

14th min TRY TIGERS to second rower Kitione Kautoga. Strong run from 10 metres out, but that was very poor goal line defence. Piggybacked down field by a penalty. No conversion.

16 mins to half time… TRY RAIDERS to Thomas Casey, great individual effort. The Raiders created the chance through good kick chase and a forced line drop out. Mitch Spencer converts from in front.

12 mins to halftime… Danger averted for the Raiders, kick ahead from the Tigers nearly produced a try, but the shouldering is deemed legal and the kick goes dead. They have some big fast players on their left edge, the Tigers.

5 mins to half time… Tigers intercept… well chased down by Steven Numambo. He’s fast. The Tigers look very dangerous when putting in kicks, but they’re not converting the chances into points.

35th min Lots of head hunting from the Tigers. Two penalties to the Raiders in a row. But it won’t do the Raiders much good. 30 seconds left.

Canberra Raiders 12
Wests Tigers 8

HALF TIME

The Tigers look a lot more dangerous in attack, the Raiders are probably fortunate to be leading.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders remain winless after three rounds of the Jersey Flegg Cup. They suffered a disappointing 26-18 defeat at the hands of the Wests Tigers at Canberra Stadium on Saturday. Canberra half Sione Moala scored the first try in just the fourth minute of the match - the result of an individual run from close range. Tries to Tigers winger Jake Hirst and second rower Kitione Kautoga gave the visitors an 8-6 lead by the 15 minute mark. Canberra struck back in the 19th minute, with a good individual run from five eighth Thomas Casey producing a four pointer.

The Raiders took a 12-8 lead to the half time break, but tries to Trey Peni and James Valevatu in the space of four minutes saw the Tigers hit 20 points. With just under 20 minutes remaining, a bomb to the line was spectacularly gathered in by Raiders centre Josh Billing - for Canberra's best try of the afternoon. The Raiders then trailed by two, but that didn't last long. A try to Tigers half Jamie Lawler in the 55th minute extended his team's lead to eight points - and that was the final margin.

In Round 4, the Raiders will again be on the road, heading to Brookvale Oval for a clash with the ninth placed Sea Eagles. The Manly outfit produced their first win of the season on Sunday, beating the Canterbury Bulldogs, 26-12, at home. After trailing by two at half time, they went on to score a total of five tries - and hold the Dogs scoreless in the second half. Raiders recruit for 2023, Zane Dunford, was one of the Manly try scorers. In the opening two rounds, Manly lost to the Panthers (30-20) and Roosters (40-24).

The Raiders and Sea Eagles last met in 2019, with Canberra winning both games, big time. In Round 7, the Raiders piled on 10 tries in a 56-4 victory at HE Labutt Field. Both Matt Timoko and Harley Smith-Shields scored doubles. Canberra scored nine tries in the return match at Canberra Stadium, winning 48-12. Smith-Shields, Timoko and Semi Valemei all crossed.

Team news: Prinston Esera will make his Jersey Flegg debut, partnering Josh Billing in the centres. Mitchell Spencer shifts into the second row, while Sam Wentworth drops out of the team. Prop Loghan Lewis has been promoted to NSW Cup, with Carsil Vaikai taking over his spot at starting prop. Mitch Souter replaces Toby Thorburn at hooker. Campbell Woolnough and Eneseli Kamuta come in on the bench.
