AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders suffered a 40-14 defeat at the hands of the Sydney Roosters at Kippax on Saturday. There's a reason the Roosters are sitting on top of the competition, having lost just two matches. They're a very good football team, with lots of strike in attack. They do everything at speed and they're highly skilled in their ball playing.

The Raiders were first to score in just the fourth minute, when centre Jed Stuart leapt high to take the Noah Ryan bomb to the try line. The Roosters hit back in the 10th minute, forcing an error in the in goal from Canberra winger Manase Kaho, with centre Jordan Swann then grounding the ball. But the Raiders competed well in the opening stages. An intercept and a long break from Roosters winger Tevita Masima gave the visitors their next opportunity. The winger was rounded up, but they then spread the ball to one side of the field and then the other, with Masima crossing in the corner in the 17th minute. From there, the Roosters really opened up, with some clever kicking and freakish offloads. Tries to Tyler Colley, Corey Ross and Luke Knight saw the Sydney outfit go to the break with a 26-6 lead.

Raiders winger Steven Numambo got a double in the second half, both tries the result of kicks to the corner. But the Roosters were always well in control. Tevita Masima scored three more tries, ending with a haul of four.

In Round 18, the Raiders travel to Melbourne for a meeting with the Victoria Thunderbolts. The Thunderbolts are on a four game losing streak - recently falling to the Roosters (38-10), Dragons (38-12) and the Sea Eagles (44-24). Last Thursday night, they conceded nine tries in a 50-16 loss to the Sharks at Cronulla. The Raiders and Thunderbolts have similar attacking and defensive records. No team has conceded more points than the Thunderbolts this year. And while the Raiders have improved in that department in the past month, they have not been much better over the season. The Rabbitohs have the worst points differential in the competition, but the Raiders and Thunderbolts are in the bottom three. Canberra's recent form, however, has been clearly better. Hopefully the Green Machine can get back on track in Bleak City on Sunday.

Team news: Notionally, there are limited changes from last week. But illness, injury and travel schedules have clearly had an impact on the Raiders lower grade line ups. So we can expect late changes. The Raiders have failed to name a hooker and a starting prop. Brad Morkos, Steven Numambo, Jed Stuart, Josh Allen, Clay Webb, Caleb Tohi and Manase Kaho have all been named in the NSW Cup squad that will play in Sydney, on the same afternoon as this match. NSW Cup requirements will likely prevail. Carsil Vaikai, Loghan Lewis and Mitch Souter have not been named this week, after playing last week.

Season record: Raiders: 7 and 8 (7th, -131)
Thunderbolts: 5 and 10 (10th, -134)
Form: Raiders: LWWWL
Thunderbolts: WLLLL
Attack: Raiders 20, Thunderbolts 21 points scored per game
Defence: Raiders 29, Thunderbolts 30 points conceded per game

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders Jersey Flegg team had a morale boosting, 24-12, victory over the Victoria Thunderbolts in Melbourne in Round 18. The Raiders had to make mass changes to their announced team line up, with the whole club seriously impacted by injuries and illness. A host of young players were called up into the team - but they were bolstered by the inclusion of NRL reserves, Brad Schneider and Ata Mariota. Schneider, who was 18th man in the NRL clash with the Storm, only played in the first half.

Fullback Sione Vuki score a double in the opening 10 minutes, with the Raiders taking an early 12-0 lead. The margin grew to 18 points at the 25 minute mark when prop Ata Mariota crossed, but the home team fought back with a try to hooker Cole Geyer just before half time. The Raiders led 18-6 at the break.

Sione Vuki secured his hat trick when he scored in the opening couple of minutes of the second half. And while Geyer - the son of former Storm winger, Matt - produced his second try of the day with 15 minutes left on the clock, the Victorian team could not draw any closer in the final stages.

9:50 min mark

In Round 19, the Raiders are back in the national capital, meeting the Canterbury Bulldogs at Canberra Stadium. It will be the opening match of a triple header, with the main event being the Raiders' NRL match against the New Zealand Warriors. The Bulldogs broke a six game losing streak on Saturday, beating the last placed Rabbitohs, 38-12, at Belmore. Both these teams have similar attacking records, while the Bulldogs have the slightly better defence. However, Canberra's defence has improved considerably over the past four or five weeks.

When these teams last met, in Round 2 this year, the Bulldogs ran out three point winners. With five minutes remaining a Thomas Casey field goal gave the Raiders a one point lead. But a try to Bulldogs centre Larson Dale-Doyle in the final couple of minutes broke Canberra's hearts. The Raiders will be hoping to get a bit of revenge on Saturday.

Team news: With Brad Schneider and Ata Mariota back in NSW Cup this week, Thomas Casey will start at five eighth and Josh Allen at prop. The team is otherwise unchanged.

Season record: Raiders: 8 and 8 (8th, -119)
Bulldogs: 6 and 10, 1 draw (10th, -77)

10th min TRY RAIDERS to Josh Billing. Spectacular stuff, there’s a cross field kick, somehow Billing juggles it and grounds it! Wasn’t sure about the grounding, but the referee was! Sione Vuki misses the conversion, about 15 metres from the posts.

15th min TRY BULLDOGS to Jordi Mazzone in the corner, off the back of a penalty. It was the Bulldogs first chance at that end of the field, the Raiders had plenty of cover coming across, including Kaloutolu, but they could not take him out. Converted by halfback Bailey Hayward from the sideline.

Raiders 10-6

14 mins to the break TRY BULLDOGS to winger Johnathan Sua. They spread it wide, to the right this time, and find an overlap on the edge. Bailey Hayward converts, not far from the posts.

29th min TRY BULLDOGS to centre William Afualo. First a break up the middle, then they send it right. Canberra having trouble on the edges in defence, in particular. Bailey Hayward, out wide, can’t convert.

HALF TIME

Canterbury Bulldogs 16
Canberra Raiders 10

The Bulldogs asking plenty of questions in the final stages of that half, with Canberra just barely holding on at times. Some good breaks from the halves up the middle.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders suffered a 42-22 defeat at the hands of the Canterbury Bulldogs at Canberra Stadium on Saturday. The Raiders were the first to score, in the second minute, with second rower Kaden Williams going over the white line in the first set. Raiders centre Josh Billing followed up in the 10th minute, taking the cross field kick from Mitch Souter in spectacular fashion. That gave the home team an early 10-0 lead. But three straight tries to the Bulldogs saw them take a 16-10 to the half time break.

Three minutes into the second half, a second try for Bulldogs winger Jordi Mazzone started an explosion of points for Canterbury. They scored three more tries in the next quarter hour, giving them a 36-10 lead at the 55 minute mark. In the final stages, Raiders winger Manase Kaho scored a double, giving Canberra a glimmer of hope. In the 58th minute a good cross field kick from Noah Ryan found Kaho in the corner. The winger backed up two minutes later, diving over out wide after a great run down the western touch line. But that was the end of the road for the Raiders. A try to Bulldogs hooker Brandon Clarke inside the final five minutes delivered the 20 point win for Canterbury.

Ethan Strange, a recruit from the Roosters system on the Central Coast, was a late inclusion for the Raiders at five eighth. He's highly regarded and will be a player to watch.

In Round 20, the Raiders host the St George Illawarrra Dragons at Kippax. It will be the second time in a month that the two clubs have faced each other at the ground - after the Dragons' home game was transferred from Wollongong due to bad weather. On that occasion, the Raiders came away with a 16-4 win - with Manase Kaho, Eneseli Kamuta and Josh Billing all scoring tries.

The Dragons lost last Friday, 24-16, to the Newcastle Knights at Hunter Stadium. They have also had recent losses to the Sea Eagles (26-16) and the Raiders. Their recent wins have come against the ladder leading Roosters (20-18) at Gosford in Round 18 and the Thunderbolts (38-12) in Melbourne. That's some inconsistent form from the third placed outfit. Hopefully, the Raiders can bounce back this week, and repeat the result from Round 16.

Team news: Jacob Church and Deakin Bright will form a new centre pairing. Josh Smith moves to the wing, replacing Livai Kaloutolu. Manase Kaho has been promoted to NSW Cup, with Temple Beauchamp replacing him on the other wing. Josh Billing has been moved from centre to the second row. Noah Ryan and Ethan Strange will have their second game together in the halves.

Tane Kiriona shifts from the second row to prop, while Eneseli Kamuta replaces Loghan Lewis in the other starting prop role. Lewis has been promoted to NSW Cup - as has hooker Mitch Souter. Sione Moala takes over the No. 9 jersey. Mitch Prest moves into the starting team at lock. Campbell Woolnough, Noah Saddler, Tate Rhea and Cooper Harris are all new additions on the bench.

Season record: Raiders: 8 and 9 (7th, -139)
Dragons: 10 and 6, 2 draws (3rd, +74)

4th min TRY DRAGONS to winger Cooper Roberts in the corner. Just managed to stay in. No conversion. They take advantage of the error from the Raiders mid field.

9th min TRY DRAGONS to centre Hayden Budd. They had him covered, but he spun in the tackle and somehow grounded it. The Dragons have had all the territory in the opening 10 minutes and most of the ball. No conversion.

14th min FORCED LINE DROP OUT conceded by the Raiders. And a penalty, offside at the kick. The Raiders somehow save a try, with the Dragons stepping over the sideline.

16th min TRY RAIDERS to Kaden Williams, he’s backing up a great break, deep in Canberra’s half from winger Josh Smith. Converted Noah Ryan. Really against the run of play.

22nd min TRY RAIDERS to Josh Billing, great flat pass from Mitchell Prest puts him in the gap. Noah Ryan misses the goal, sprays left. Wasn’t too far from the posts.
