I'd like to give myself a pat on the back for predicting an appearance at 9 for Frawley this year.

I don't think that this gives much hint about positions for a number of players, players just need to be given a run. But... Valemei is certainly not a centre... Frawley starting at hooker instead of Trevilyan is bizarre. Schneider should be put at 7, we know what Sam Williams can do at 7. Bit surprised at Mooney in the second row. I can only assume Caleb Esera is injured or ill.

No Timoko presumably means he will be starting at centre come Rd 1.

Deservingly.

Really hope Schneider, Savage and Mooney put forward strong performances.

Looking at that we could see Kris and Morkos get half a game each at centre. That'd be good to get a look at.

I've not seen much of Rushton in action at all.

Hopefully Treyvilian gets equal time at hooker.

Is there an issue with Jamal? Why is Sam Williams in the 7? Glad to get a look at Mooney in top company. Savage named to start in the FB position with CNK on the bench. No Hodgo or Starling in the first trial either. I thought Sticky was supposed to be taking the trials more seriously this year. Most of the FG spine not selected. Maybe next trial.

Many of those who are guaranteed an NRL start are being rested. The rested players will be played in Trial 2.

Mooney being trialled on an edge is probably the most interesting thing.

Shows us who is locked in.

Sutton at lock and Valemei at centre is disgusting though, trial or not.
well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.

I am hoping Sutton at 13 is because that’s an area we are stacked in (Whitehead, Elliot, Hodgson, young etc) so we don’t need to see how anyone goes and are just using it to get some minutes into an extra prop.

Semi at centre is an admission that he is a below par winger.

Frawly at 9 is weird, hoping Trevilyan gets some quality game time.

Hoping Elliot at 11 is just as a back up and he is not being considered for a starting spot.

CNK on the bench is weird.

I like that Croker is playing. Also like that Savage is being trialled at FB

I think its pretty obvious this is the reserve forwards (15-17) and depth guys, and Croker, who needs miles in the legs and a chance to prove his ability.

CHN might be the only bench guy I expect to start.

The only real interest is Savage vs CNK who are possibly in a "shootout".

So, I'm going to assume the 17 is:

1. Savage/ CNK
2. Cotric
3. *Croker* pending fitness
4. Timoko
5. Savage/ CNK
6. Jack
7. Fog
8. Papa
9. Hodgo
10. Tapz
11. Huddo
12. CHN
13. Whitey

14. Starlo
15. Elliott
16. Sutton
17. Horse/Guler

I definitely like the idea of Savage and CNK interchanging between the wing and fullback in attack/defence -

Problem with that is Rapana has to come back into the side and then Ricky is faced with the question of the stronger defender or attacker at number 1. Regardless I think CNK also needs to be in the top 13 somewhere.

I too like the idea of the CNK/ Savage interchange, but in this instance I was more looking at it as they will fill those 2 spots, and Ricky will decide which way around.

That assumes Kris isn't at centre over Croker. However, I reckon Ricky would leave out Horse/Guler before Elliott. TBH, given that Starlo, Hodgo, Elliott, Sutton, Papa and Tapine are all capable of playing 50mins +++, I think we could carry a back utility anyway.

Really strange side. Why is Semi starting as a centre over Morkos, the Aust schoolboys centre? Why is Schneider 5/8? Frawley at hooker over Adrian Trevilyan? Please. We know what Sutton can do - would have liked to see Peter Hola or Rushton starting

One might suggest there could be a little switcheroo happening in game or at halftime.

A little strange re Semi but I like that we're giving it a shot. He's behind at least Rapa, Cotric and Savage (and HSS when fit) in the pecking order for a wing spot and we know we have a little depth in the centres. Could be an absolute failure but could prove a success. Do agree though that this Morkos fella looks like a better prospect as a centre long term so it's disappointing he isn't starting

Wish list: What your club needs from pre-season trials

Raiders

A spine to settle on. Ricky Stuart has options with his backline but a question mark lingers over who will play fullback with Xavier Savage pushing Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad for the No.1 jersey. Savage will get a first crack against the Roosters on Friday night with Nicoll-Klokstad named on the bench. First-choice halves Jack Wighton and Jamal Fogarty were left out of the squad.

Hey Bay53, when you look at our side and the squad the Chooks have named, I think it's clear why we have the earlier TV time slot. However, it is a big opportunity for some of the young guns to push their credentials for later FG selection. I'm really looking forward to watching Savage and Mooney in particular. I'm keen to see how Rushton goes now after some time in our system and Trevilyan as well.

Not sure the teams being selected had anything to do with being in the earlier time slot but yes it is an opportunity for those on the fringe of the first team to press their case.

One would expect 9 of the 12 from the top 30 to be automatic selections for the 17 to play in round 1, so this 22 is playing for the other 8 spots.

Jarrod Croker needs to earn Canberra Raiders stripes again

He might have 291 NRL games and 2238 points under his lime green belt, but Canberra Raiders co-captain Jarrod Croker is looking to earn his spot in the Green Machine's second pre-season trial.

"My focus is going out [Friday] night and playing well and trying to make a bit of a difference and being recognised, and then get picked to go next week. I feel like the last couple of weeks I've been ready to go. It's a little bit unknown how it's going to go and how it all feels, but so far so good."

Croker puts knee to test in NRL trial game

Jarrod Croker is back to lead the Canberra Raiders in their first NRL trial game on Friday night, just months after stem cell surgery to mend his failing knee.

"I want to play round one - I want to play every game this year. That's the way I've always been when playing footy. It's certainly not a muck around or a fitness blowout tomorrow night. It's put your best foot forward and try and do your best to get picked ... round one."

Brad Schneider ready to fill any Canberra Raiders playmaker voids

Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart has backed young half Brad Schneider to help step up and fill any playmaker void if needed.

"Absolutely. He's vying for that position," Stuart said of Schneider. "It's really important for everyone to play well in these next two trials from an individual point of view and to get back into the swing of things. Everybody understands, and it's not a threat, that performance in these next two games are crucial.

He had shoulder surgery in early December, so perhaps not fully recovered. Not on any official injury list I’ve seen.

the 3 things I am looking foward to watching tonight.

1. How Savage goes at FB
2. Croker's fitness and form
3. If there is any noticeable different in our attack with Crawley having his finger prints on the team (although we are playing mainly reserves).
