France to host 2025 Rugby League World Cup

France have won the right to host the 2025 Rugby League World Cup, the first time the country will have staged the global event for more than half a century. The French Federation declared the news on Friday, saying that a press conference would be staged in Paris next Tuesday where French Prime Minister Jean Castex would announce details.

A statement from the Federation said: "The Prime Minister will announce the launch of the Rugby League World Cup, which will be organised by France in 2025.

'The Rooster is going to sing again': France aiming high for 2025 World Cup

After announcing his government’s “unreserved support” for the 2025 World Cup in France, French Prime Minister Jean Castex pointed to the Paul Barrière Trophy and declared: “The Rooster you can see on the top of the trophy is going to sing again in 2025”.

The 17th edition of the World Cup will be the biggest yet, with men’s, women’s, wheelchair and youth tournaments each comprising of 16 teams to be played in 40 cities and towns in every region of France.

French to take RLWC2025 'to the people'

French organisers of the 2025 World Cup have promised to deliver a low-carbon, people's tournament with 90 per cent of the 128 matches held in mid-sized towns.

So far there have been bids from 38 towns and cities to act as hosts, from Brittany and Normandy in the north to the rugby league heartland of the south, and include Vichy, a spa town that was the base for German occupation in the Second World War, an event to which Castex referred in his opening speech.

That map and the list of regions and cities that want to stage matches is really impressive, considering rugby league is predominantly played in the south of France.

In fact, it's played almost exclusively in the South West, which makes the point you raise even more impressive.

For anyone that doesn't know, rugby league became the dominant code in the 1930s, but was outlawed by the Nazi collaborating Petain government in collusion with the union authorities.

There is an excellent book called The Forbidden Game, which details that period.

Game of 13, as it had to be called - because it couldn't use rugby - never recovered.

There were some excellent French sides in the 1950s - including the one that won a series in Australia - but the infrastructure had been demolished, meaning the success couldn't be sustained.

I just hope Lyon comes forward to host a game or even the final (and not because that's where we last won the World Cup). I lived there for a time and it's a phenomenal city - any excuse for a return would be welcome.

I'd love to go to this
The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

I'd have thought it was stronger in the south east, but anyway. I did live in France, Paris, for four years and travelled everywhere. Beautiful country, and it should be a great tournament. I've seen suggestions that the big cities like Paris, Lyon, Marseilles and Toulouse are in line for the finals series.

New venues considered for 2025 World Cup after France withdraws

New venues are being considered for the 2025 World Cup after France withdrew from hosting the tournament.

The board of International Rugby League will convene on Wednesday to consider options for the World Cup after the France 2025 organising committee announced that it had been forced to relinquish the hosting rights. IRL chair Troy Grant said the decision was disappointing, but the France 2025 board of directors felt they had no choice after the French Government demanded a guarantee for the risk of loss for the event.
