The Raiders go bush in Round 4, with the Manly Sea Eagles taking their home game against Canberra to Mudgee's Glen Willow Oval.
Last round: Canberra Raiders 24 - Gold Coast Titans 22. The footy gods were angry. And then the footy gods smiled. Perhaps that's why it was the classic "game of two halves". Late in the first half, the Canberra Raiders were down 22-0. By the end of the match, they'd scored an unanswered 24 points.
The Raiders have come back from a 22 point deficit twice before. In 2015, they trailed the Wests Tigers, 22-0, after 28 minutes at Leichhardt Oval. They won 30-22. The following year, they trailed the Newcastle Knights, 22-0, after 38 minutes at Canberra Stadium. They won 29-25 with the most remarkable of golden tries from Jordan Rapana - the result of a Blake Austin field goal attempt that went wrong. They've never come from behind by more than 22 points, to win. In Round 3, 2022, the Raiders equalled that feat.
More on Round 3: As I saw it
Team news: Nick Cotric returns for the Raiders on the wing, with Sebastian Kris dropping out of the squad due to COVID protocols. Tom Starling has been named at starting hooker, Matt Frawley on the bench. However, it will not surprise if coach Ricky Stuart switches the two before kick off. Manly coach Des Hasler has named an unchanged 17. Josh Aloiai has completed his suspension and is included on the reserves list.
Late changes: The Raiders omitted Adrian Trevilyan, James Schiller, Sam Williams, Trey Mooney and Peter Hola from their squad on Friday evening. Their starting 17 is unchanged. Xavier Savage and Ryan Sutton remain on the reserves list. Manly centre Brad Parker is out, replaced by Tolutau Koula. Christian Tuipulotu and Josh Aloiai remain on the reseves list.
History: The Raiders have won just 22 of 60 games against the Manly Sea Eagles, and drawn one. Since late 2004, the Raiders have won only seven of 27 contests, and one of the past five. If you add in matches against the Northern Eagles, the numbers are no better. Overall, Canberra has won 24 of 66 contests, a 36 per cent win rate.
The Raiders lost both matches in 2017 in golden point - 20-18 at Canberra Stadium and 21-20 at Brookvale. In 2018, Canberra lost the Round 4 match at Brookvale, 32-16, but finally got some payback in Round 12, with Aidan Sezer clinching a 21-20 victory with a final minute field goal. In 2019, the Raiders lost in Round 7 to the Sea Eagles 24-20 at Brookvale - despite the fact the home team lost key playmaker Daly Cherry-Evans to injury for most of the second half. The Sea Eagles backed that up with an 18-14 victory at Canberra Stadium in Round 23. In 2020, on a bleak night at Campbelltown Stadium, the Raiders lost at "home", 14-6.
Last year, an Origin affected match at Brookvale Oval saw the Green Machine get an unexpected, 30-16, win. But six weeks later, the Sea Eagles proved to be the bogey team again, beating the Raiders, 19-18, at Lang Park. A Daly Cherry-Evans field goal, with less than two minutes remaining, proved to be the match winner. It put Manly ahead by seven, and a last gasp try from the Raiders proved to be too late.
The two teams have never met at Mudgee. The last time Manly took the Raiders to a country town - to Albury in 2015 - Canberra won, 29-16.
2021 Round 23 Canberra Raiders V Manly Sea Eagles
2021 Round 17 Canberra Raiders V Manly Sea Eagles
2020 Round 6 Canberra Raiders V Manly Sea Eagles
Form: Raiders: WLWLW
Sea Eagles: WLLLW
The Sea Eagles started the season with losses to the Panthers (28-6) and Roosters (26-12), but managed a one point win over the Bulldogs (13-12) in their last outing at a wet Brookvale Oval. A Daly Cherry-Evans field goal broke the deadlock with four minutes remaining.
Betting: The Sea Eagles are firm $1.45 favourites, with the Titans paying $2.75. The Raiders have 6.5 points start in the line betting.
Key match-ups:
Brad Schneider and Daly Cherry-Evans: Brad Schneider, 21, is a three game rookie halfback, having started in just two matches. But he's showing why he had such a high reputation in schoolboy football. He produced two try assists last week against the Titans - setting up the match leveling try with a grubber for Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad. He then kicked a pressure goal, to give his team the winning two point margin. Daley Cherry-Evans is one of the leading play makers in the competition, with 264 appearances to his name. He is used to clutch situations himself. He was back at it last week, kicking the winning field goal for the Sea Eagles. Schneider will have his hands full, but he just needs to keep his cool and level head in this one.
Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad and Tom Trbojevic: Tom Trbojevic is the Sea Eagles' talisman. Last year, he won the Dally M Medal, and almost single handedly, carried his team into the finals. He is just lethal in attack. Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad had a tough game last week, suffering some damage to his ribs. Hopefully he will be fit and well come game day. Nicoll-Klokstad makes lots of tough carries and produces lots of metres. He's also terrific in organising the Raiders' defence from the back. But he's not in the same class as Trbojevic in terms of ball playing. If I'm awarding skins, I'd have to give this match up to Tommy Turbo. That is not to underestimate the importance of CNK to his team.
My tip: Which Canberra Raiders team will turn up in Mudgee? The one that took to the field in the first half last weekend, or the one that ran out in the second? If it is the second, the Green Machine has a real chance of winning against a Sea Eagles team that has so often broken green hearts.
The team that came from behind against the Titans held the ball, was disciplined and had intent in both attack and defence. They will need to do all that in Mudgee and more. The forward pack will need to get on top in the middle. They need to ensure the Manly play makers, Daly Cherry-Evans and Tom Trbojevic, have no space. They can't allow the Sea Eagles backs to get any momentum. I think the Raiders can do it, but whether they do it is another thing. In a way, I'm glad that Manly got their first win of the year last week. Why? Because their backs won't be right up against the wall. And that's when Des Hasler and the Sea Eagles are most dangerous.
The Raiders are still seriously disrupted by injury. But there is talent in the side. The main issue is their consistency. It is for that reason that the Sea Eagles are favourites. And for that reason, I'll tip the Sea Eagles by six. I hope I'm wrong.
What they're saying:
Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart after the win over the Titans: "We're our own worst enemy. The first half, I said it all week, he way we played last week, you can't turn possession over and give other teams more football than us. We played our style in the second half. We played well. They showed a lot of resilience and determination. I'll tell you, there's a lot of football teams that wouldn't come out and be able to do that."
Jordan Rapana on the return of Nick Cotric: "He's a massive boost for us. He brings a lot of energy, bounces around, gets his nose through the line and breaks tackles, and it's definitely something we've lacked in the past, even when he went to the Bulldogs - we missed him last year as well. So I'm excited too for him to be back and he'll add a lot of spark to our attack."

Re: 2022 Rd 4 V Sea Eagles: Game Day
Just watched NRL 360 and Benji thinking the Raiders might have got a bit of analysis and review. Nothing more than a few seconds.
We beat the Sharks without getting any comment, but as soon as Cronulla get a couple of wins there appearing everywhere and getting lots of coverage.

How do we win?
Forwards must dominate. If we allow them to make metres, DCE will run amok and Turbo will have a field day.
Kick to Saab and have someone in his face ASAP.
Kick deep, to the corner and take TT out of the equation.
No bloody mistakes.
L Croker is not a running 9. He always passes to DCE. Keep pressure on DCE and they look flustered.
I'm not 100% confident, but if we can play like we did in that second half against GC and the first half against Cronulla, we'll go a long way towards winning.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.
If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Go the mighty green machine, bring back the smart, and fast plays, feeling better Cotric back in the side, and starling to start the match.

No clue what to expect today.
Had us down for a L based on where I think the clubs will finish the season…
Low expectations coming into this..

Can we bring in a Xavier if we need to? In Ricky I trust.
