Re: 2022 State of Origin I: Teams and Game Day
I think Wighton should be at centre, and if not, at #14, but i think he'll miss out
Which will be good for us.
Which will be good for us.

Re: 2022 State of Origin I: Teams and Game Day
I'd have Jack playing for my life over Staggs on the left. Jack on the left and Crichton on the right for me.
Freddy must love a Saffa. He's been at least as bad as his brother.
And Frizzell is past it. I'm not that shocked with JAC and Jake T being left out.
Re: 2022 State of Origin I: Teams and Game Day
JAC is a shock for me
I'd pick him and To'o if were my decision, he's proven himself at SOO level and he's played well enough at the dogs to get that gig. Not his fault no one there can get him quality ball. He's finished well when given opportunities
For me the team would be:
Teddy, To'o, Wighton, Crighton, JAC, Luai, Cleary, RCG, Api, Haas, Murray, Martin, Yeo
Paulo, Matterson, Sims and Hynes/Cook (i'd hear arguments either way, tough call),
But i think Saifiti is going to be there, i think Frizzel will too and im not sure they should be either

Re: 2022 State of Origin I: Blues V Maroons
They're picking Hynes because he can cover both fullback and halfback. Teddy went down one year (2020, 3rd match) and we lost. Jack is not a halfback and never has been one. But neither is Luai and he won't be able to run the show if anything happens to Cleary.radicalraider wrote: ↑May 29, 2022, 8:35 pm They're picking hynes coz he can cover for the halves.. what does that tell you about our five eight..

It says they think Hynes is playing better footy than Wighton right nowradicalraider wrote: ↑May 29, 2022, 8:35 pm They're picking hynes coz he can cover for the halves.. what does that tell you about our five eight..
The current NSW has had no qualms in selecting Wighton for that role before because he can cover the halves, so it's not that they dont think he's capable of that role. Simply they believe someone else is more capable for that role right now (i dont agree btw... Hynes can cover fullback and halves. Wighton can cover fullback, wing, centre, halves, back row, lock)

Fittler names 22-player squad for Game One of Origin series
NSW Blues coach Brad Fittler tonight named a 22-player squad for the opening game of the 2022 State of Origin series at Stadium Australia in Sydney on Wednesday 8 June.
The squad includes seven players from 2021 NRL premiers Penrith Panthers while James Tedesco will captain the team for the second consecutive year, having officially taken on the role in 2020.
The squad also includes six players who are yet to debut for the Blues – Stephen Crichton, Nicho Hynes, Ryan Matterson, Jacob Saifiti, Joseph Suaalii and Kotoni Staggs – with Fittler to name his team for the opening game by midday tomorrow (a starting 17, an 18th player and four reserves).
The squad will hold an open media session and have their team photograph taken at Crowne Plaza Coogee tomorrow and will attend the annual True Blues ball at The Star Event Centre at Pyrmont later that night where the latest NSWRL The Star Hall of Fame inductees will be announced.
The extended squad will train together for the first time at Coogee Oval on Tuesday 31 May. Players not named in the team for Game One can return to their clubs to prepare for Round 13 of the NRL (players with byes can remain in camp).

Re: 2022 State of Origin I: Blues V Maroons
Not sure that Frizzell and Sims are playing well enough and neither is Safiti. I think Qld may win this year. The Queensland sides are playing well, aside from the Titans (Tino and Brimson excepted). The big question will be Billy Slater, but he probably has enough experience around him to not fail and that spine is in great form. Grant, DCE, Munster... Ponga not so much but he is a big game player with a **** attitude. I'd almost select Brimson but Ponga will lift.
Shoving it in your face since 2017
Re: 2022 State of Origin I: Teams and Game Day
I agree on your Api selection - he is so dynamic and a real threat - plus his combination with Yeo, Cleary and Luai is excellent, but I suspect they'll pick Cook as he's a regular 80 minute player. Plus ... did you know he's a former beach sprinter?Botman wrote:JAC is a shock for me

Id honestly just keep as much of the penrith spine as possible haha
So that's pretty much all of them and Teddy in for Edwards

Re: 2022 State of Origin I: Blues V Maroons
Based on the players picked I would have:
Teddy, To'o, Staggs, Crichton, Tupou, Luai, Cleary, Yeo, Sims, Murray, Paulo, Cook, Haas - bench Hynes, RCG, Martin and Matterson.
I was surprised Jurbo wasn't picked for the squad and JAC. Both are recent season regulars who have played well.

jturbo is on a little bit of the Shaun Fensom career arc
Very good player and obviously on a different level to Fensom in that regard, but similarly they were both players who simply were unable to adapt to the changing nature of the game and its cyclical styles
Jturbo is very much plodville in this V’Landysball era

Re: 2022 State of Origin I: Blues V Maroons
Wighton should be one of the centres imo. The shiny and new Crichton and Staggs are not as suited to that role as him. Great defender. Tough. Best kick chase in the game.
Anyways. Cue Jack Wighton being 18th man. Not released for round 13, but Su'allii being released and scoring the match winning try.

Josh Papalii selected for Queensland Maroons
The Queensland Rugby League is pleased to confirm the Queensland Maroons squad for Game I of the State of Origin series against the New South Wales Blues.
Four players who have come through Queensland Rugby League’s pathway competitions and programs will make their Origin debuts for the Maroons, who assemble in Brisbane today to begin preparations for the June 8 clash in Sydney.
Cherbourg Hornets junior Selwyn Cobbo has played his way onto the wing following a series of consistent performances for the Brisbane Broncos, while a similar rich vein of form has been the catalyst for the selection of North Queensland Cowboys forward Reuben Cotter at lock.
Maroons coach Billy Slater has also injected new blood onto the interchange bench, with Patrick Carrigan (Brisbane Broncos) and Jeremiah Nanai (North Queensland Cowboys) named alongside Harry Grant and Lindsay Collins.
Collins returns to the Origin arena for the first time since 2020 in which he played all three games of the series.
Queensland selectors have also rewarded the consistent efforts of forward mainstays Tino Fa'asuamaleaui, Josh Papalii, Kurt Capewell and Felise Kaufusi.
They will pack down alongside starting hooker Ben Hunt, who starred for Queensland in the No. 9 jersey in last year’s Game III victory.
The proven halves combination of captain Daly Cherry-Evans and Cameron Munster unite again, with the experienced duo to combine with an exciting backline featuring Kalyn Ponga, Cobbo, Valentine Holmes, Dane Gagai and Xavier Coates.
Tom Dearden, Jai Arrow, Thomas Flegler, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow and Murray Taulagi will also join the Maroons camp as part of an extended squad.
Cherry-Evans will captain the Maroons for a fourth consecutive series.

Josh Papalii in Maroons squad, Jack Wighton named NSW Blues starting centre
Josh Papalii has backed the Raiders forward pack to step up in his absence after the prop was named in Billy Slater's Queensland State of Origin squad to take on NSW in the series opener in Sydney on Wednesday, June 8. The 30-year-old Raiders veteran was confident in the depth in Canberra to pick up the slack while he's with the Queensland squad too, led by New Zealand's Joe Tapine.
"We've got that depth to cover all spots. We're going well at the moment, matching it with the top teams," Papalii said.

Jturbo is very much plodville in this V’Landysball era
I'd have picked Ado Carr as well, especially given Tommy Turbo and Latrell are injured. Although I dont think the game will be won/lost there. Junior Paulo is my biggest concern. He is enormous and his lateral movement is very average. I worry about him in a game of this level of intensity. If he's burning out then Munster, Ponga and Harry Grant are going cause him headaches.

Jack Wighton named at centre in new-look Blues backline
Jack Wighton will start at left centre for New South Wales while Kotoni Staggs will make his debut at right centre as part of a new-look backline for Game One of the 2022 Ampol State of Origin series.
Wighton's selection in the starting side will see Panthers centre Stephen Crichton make his Origin debut off the bench alongside another potential debutant in Eels forward Ryan Matterson. With Crichton set to earn the bench utility role, Sharks halfback Nicho Hynes will likely feature as 18th man.

Jack Wighton will start at left centre for New South Wales while Kotoni Staggs will make his debut at right centre as part of a new-look backline for Game One of the 2022 Ampol State of Origin series.

Mulitalo was found to be not eligible in the end. Wasn't allowed to play for QLD.

Looks like they know Hynes will be 18th man. Wighton starting at centre.radicalraider wrote: ↑May 29, 2022, 8:48 pmThey know hynes is a better ball player than Jack.. I agree..

I strongly suspected Wighton would play centre... did ppl think Freddy would forget him that easily. He loves him
I'm surprised it's for Crichton though, I thought it would be for Staggs

Didn't really see Wighton at centre coming. I thought No. 14.

Chrichton on the bench doesn't make a lot of sense. Both Wighton and Staggs or even Hynes would be better suited to the bench role IMO
Re: 2022 State of Origin I: Blues V Maroons
I can't believe Sualli was even selected. Actually yes I can believe it. I'll put money on it that part of luring him to the Roosters was an unwritten promise to fast track his development through Fittler showing his club bias by selecting him.julian87 wrote:Wighton should be one of the centres imo. The shiny and new Crichton and Staggs are not as suited to that role as him. Great defender. Tough. Best kick chase in the game.
Anyways. Cue Jack Wighton being 18th man. Not released for round 13, but Su'allii being released and scoring the match winning try.
Shoving it in your face since 2017

In fairness to Raidalraider, Hynes does have at least one of the hallmarks that would have made him an automatic Blues selection a few years ago. That is:zim wrote: ↑May 30, 2022, 10:36 amLooks like they know Hynes will be 18th man. FWIW Hynes is playing well, but is wasted on the bench is SOO as he isn't a genuine utility

If he decides Jack is a better Origin player than Crichton it does. You start your best players.kiwi raider wrote: ↑May 30, 2022, 11:00 am Chrichton on the bench doesn't make a lot of sense. Both Wighton and Staggs or even Hynes would be better suited to the bench role IMO
If a utility is needed Jack can still play halves/fb/backrow and Crichton comes on to centre. You don't lose utility value just because you're starting.
Whether Jack is a better origin player than Crichton- judgement call. But he is as likely to influence the game without the ball as he is with it, might be just what scraped him over the line.
