Fantastic finish, with the Raiders coming from behind to win in the final stages.

The win means a sixth placed finish, as the Panthers unexpectedly lost to the Bears today. It means the Raiders have the finals in every junior reps grade, the first time that’s happened since the introduction of Tarsha Gale Cup.

MATCH REPORT: Canberra Raiders claim victory with Tarsha Gale Cup finals spot on the line

The Canberra Raiders came away with a narrow 24-22 victory against South Sydney Rabbitohs to earn sixth position on the Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup ladder, and the last remaining spot in the finals.

After the Penrith Panthers – who went into Round 9 on equal competition points with Canberra – lost to North Sydney Bears earlier in the day, all the Raiders needed was a win at Redfern Oval to keep their season alive.

2023 Round 9 Junior Representatives Wrap

Image

Tarsha Gale

The Canberra Raiders have secured a finals place in the Tarsha Gale Cup, after a come from behind victory over the South Sydney Rabbitohs at Redfern Oval. After a break for Easter, they will meet the third placed Newcastle Knights in Week 1 of the finals.

Going into the final round of the regular season, the Raiders were in seventh place on the ladder, but level with the Panthers on nine competition points. The Panthers stumbled against the 10th placed Bears on Saturday, losing 14-6 at Kenthurst. And when the Raiders headed onto the field, they knew they could jump into sixth with a win over the Rabbitohs.

South Sydney started the game strongly, and were first to score when centre Shanelle Lyons crashed over from close range in the 10th minute. The Raiders struck back in the 14th minute, when half back Lola Fletcher sent Lara Cosgrove on a 50 metre run to the try line. Great pass and running.

With three minutes to half time, Lyons was back in the action, making a huge break down the middle of the field, from 40 metres out. Raiders hooker Kayla Fleming came from nowhere to tackle her from behind, stopping her just short of the line. It was a critical try saver. With a minute left on the clock, the Raiders forced the home team into error at their own end - and Lara Cosgrove capitalised, scoring her second try right on half time. The Raiders went to the break with a 12-4 lead.

South Sydney caught the Raiders unawares at the start of the second half, regathering their own short kick off. Rabbitohs bench player, Cherellyn Tapauai was soon in under the posts. Raiders halfback Kayla Fleming extended the Raiders lead to eight points with a try in the 37th minute. But tries to hooker Te Ramaarie Muru-Hauraki and half Siniva Saanga in the space of four minutes saw South Sydney take a 22-18 lead with 12 minutes remaining.

The Rabbitohs brought out plenty of big hits in an attempt to assert their dominance. But with three minutes remaining, Lola Fletcher darted out of dummy half, five metres from the line, and scored the equalizer right near the posts. Cosgrove booted the match winning conversion. It was an exhilarating finish.

The Raiders ended the regular rounds with a 4 and 3 record, while drawing one match. They finished level with the Steelers and Eels on 11 competition points, but sixth on points differential. Onto the finals!

Harold Matthews

The Harold Matthews Canberra Raiders have finished the regular season in fifth place on the ladder - qualifying for Week 1 of the finals - after beating the Balmain Tigers, 26-16, at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday.

The Canterbury Bulldogs headed into the final round leading the competition. But they lost, big time, 52-6, to second placed Penrith Panthers on Saturday. That meant the Raiders and Bulldogs not only finished with the same number of competition points (14), but also exactly the same number of points for (192) and against (160). The Bulldogs have scored one more try than the Raiders (34-33), meaning the Raiders finished fifth. But that doesn't matter much. Fourth plays fifth in Week 1 of the finals. It'll be a fairly evenly matched contest.

The Panthers won the minor premiership, with one more competition point than the next four teams. The Knights have grabbed second place and a week off, on points differential. The sixth placed Sharks are just two points adrift of the Panthers. That's a log jam. That's incredibly close.

Raiders half Jonah Anderson was first to score at a wet Leichhardt, following a kick to the in goal from five eighth Braydan Darmoday in the 4th minute. Tigers fullback Michael Nassar answered in the 10th minute - but a try to Canberra second rower Samuel Griffin from close range saw the Green Machine edge back in front. Balmain went to the break with a 16-12 lead, after scoring two tries in the space of five minutes. The Raiders brought it home in the second half, while keeping the Tigers scoreless. Centre Harry Hudson crossed in the 44th minute, with the Darmody conversion giving Canberra the lead. Darmody produced the decisive try with 10 minutes left on the clock - diving over the line from dummy half. His penalty goal right on full time rounded out the win.

It's good reward for Rourke O'Sullivan's team. Many of the players who made the Raiders a real contender in this grade last year, moved up to SG Ball this year. And the trial form didn't look great, really. But the 6 and 2 record is is a fine result. Now the hard work starts all over again in Week 1 of the finals.

SG Ball

The Canberra Raiders have won the 2023 SG Ball minor premiership - only the third time the club has achieved that feat. The Raiders first did it in 1995, when the Raiders went on to win the premiership, undefeated in 15 games. Canberra also took the minor premiership in 2015 - but failed to win either of their finals games that year. That underlines how the job is not done for the 2023 Raiders team.

The Green Machine had to beat the Balmain Tigers at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday to take top spot - with the Panthers securing at least a top two finish earlier in the day. The Raiders ran in five tries, while holding the Tigers scoreless. The Raiders led 10-0 at the break, with centre Jacob Iosefa and fullback Sam Gash scoring tries in the space of five minutes. The try for Gash was set up by good break and offload from hooker Owen Pattie. Tries to Pattie, second rower Joseph Roddy and half Keahn Skipps in the second half wrapped it up. Final score, 28-0.

The Raiders lost only one game in the regular season and will skip Week 1 of the finals, having already qualified for Week 2. They will meet the winner of the Week 1 finals match between the Knights and Roosters. Two weeks off will mean the team is refreshed, and has time to overcome any niggling injuries. But hopefully it does not break their momentum. Hopefully, the best is yet to come.

AT A GLANCE: The Harold Matthews Canberra Raiders finished the regular season in fifth place on the ladder - and now meet the fourth placed Canterbury Bulldogs in Week 1 of the finals.

The Bulldogs headed into the final round leading the competition. But they lost, big time, 52-6, to second placed Penrith Panthers. That meant the Raiders and Bulldogs not only finished with the same number of competition points (14), but also exactly the same number of points for (192) and against (160). The Bulldogs scored one more try than the Raiders during the season (34-33), meaning the Raiders finished fifth. But that doesn't matter much, as fourth plays fifth in Week 1.

The Raiders' only losses this year have come against the Eels (24-6) and Steelers (30-12). The Bulldogs fell to the Knights in Round 3 (20-12) - and, as mentioned, the Panthers in the final round. The Raiders have a 1 and 1 record against teams in the top six, the Bulldogs are 0 and 2. It should be a very even contest. These two teams have strangely not met in this grade since 2017.

Team news: Thomas Handsaker replaces Andrew Muir at starting prop. Harvey Gay comes into the second row, with Brock Apolevski dropping back to the interchange bench.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders have secured a finals place in the Tarsha Gale Cup for the first time since 2019. Going into the final round of the regular season, the Raiders were in seventh place on the ladder, but level with the Panthers on nine competition points. The Panthers stumbled against the 10th placed Bears, losing 14-6 at Kenthurst. And when the Raiders took to the field at Redfern Oval, they knew they could jump into sixth if they could win against the Rabbitohs. They did just that, coming from behind in the final five minutes to take a two point victory.

The Raiders now meet the third placed Newcastle Knights in Week 1 of the finals - and the numbers show it won't be easy for the Green Machine to progress. The Knights have produced two more wins than the Raiders. And while there is not too much difference in the attacking record of the two teams this season, the Knights have a far superior defensive record. The Knights lost both of their games against top six teams this year - the Bulldogs (22-20) and the Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy (22-10). The Raiders are 0 and 3 against the top six teams - losing to the Roosters (38-6), Eels (26-12) and Steelers (44-6). That suggests the Knights may have had a slightly easier draw. Hopefully, the Raiders can get the upset on Saturday.

Team news: Samantha Nealon moves to centre, with Mya McGlynn taking over on the wing. Elli Beecham drops to the bench. Bonnie Brewer will start at hooker, while India Dyball moves from lock to prop. Kayla Fleming takes over at lock.

2023 season record: Raiders: 4 and 3, 1 draw (6th, -18)
Knights: 6 and 2 (3rd, +82)
Form: Raiders: LDWLW
Knights: WWWLW
Attack: Raiders 20, Knights 21 points scored per game
Defence: Raiders 22, Knights 11 points conceded per game

Tarsha Gale Cup finals | Six players to watch

Canberra Raiders – Georgia Willey, fullback

The Raiders could definitely score tries – 29 in total – but conceded more points than the Eels and Steelers. Still, they were quick learners going from one try in Round 2 to eight in Round 4. Fullback and captain Georgia Willey led the charge scoring eight tries in five games. She was well supported by centre-utility Lara Cosgrove with seven tries, who also stepped in as back-up goal-kicker for Mya McGlynn.

Harold Matthews Cup finals | Six players to watch

Canberra Raiders – Braydan Darmody, five-eighth

The Raiders are into back-to-back finals series kicking off their season with four straight wins – the opening three by 30 points or more, which were all ‘away’ games.

Every team needs a reliable goalkicker to ice the tries, but the Raiders also have a versatile one. Darmody started the season at fullback but ended up the regular No.6, scoring two tries along with his 25 goals.

Harold Matthews coach Rourke O'Sullivan proud of hard working team

The Canberra Raiders Harold Matts side face off against the Bulldogs this Saturday in an elimination final at Campbelltown Stadium on Saturday.

"At the start of the season you want to put yourself into this position and we’ve put ourselves there now so the boys are really excited to play on the weekend," coach Rourke O'Sullivan said. "I'm really proud, they are just a hard working team. They’ve put a lot of effort into the season and it’s paid off with semi-final footy this weekend.”

SG Ball Cup finals | Six players to watch

Canberra Raiders – Sam Gash, fullback-wing

The Raiders came through the season with the perfect home record (4-0) and only lost one away game to the Illawarra Steelers. They top-tailed their year conceding no points in Round One (Melbourne Storm 66-0) or in Round Nine (Balmain Tigers 28-0).

Scoring 58 tries over nine games gave them an average of six tries per game, with two players who shared the No.1 position – Chevy Stewart and Sam Gash - scoring 11 of those between them. Gash also kicked 30 goals. Hooker Owen Pattie scored six tries and was one of the driving forces in the Raiders having the best defensive record in the competition.

We're inside the final 10 minutes in Harold Matthews. The Bulldogs have just broken the deadlock. Canberra did well to come back with tries either side of half time. Canberra trails by six with seven minutes left.
