Canberra Raiders' Jordan Rapana back for Penrith Panthers showdown

The Raiders will welcome back Jordan Rapana from suspension for their round 21 game against the top-of-the-table Penrith Panthers on Saturday.

"It's a big bonus for us with Rapa's yardage and carries and the way he runs the football - he's just freakish," Raiders teammate Nick Cotric said of Rapana. "You never know what he's going to do next, so it's a big plus for us."

DCE has literally kicked us to death for years.

Except for the dead bit. We're not actually dead.

Manly have always been our bogey team, and Melbourne more recently. Shocking record.

Our recent record against the Storm is quite good especially in Melbourne. We have nothing on Souths who have never won a game in Melbourne

At the start of this season I was really happy to see our focus on second phase play in attack. With Papa, Taps, CHN, Young, Elliott and Horsburgh (and even Whitehead) I still think we have one of the most skillful packs in the comp.

What I'm really loving in the last couple of games is watching Wighton and Fogarty combine on both sides of the field. It's a real point of difference and certainly mitigates the necessity of having a ball playing lock provide that extra link between the ruck and the halves.

A good old fashioned 'there's two f's in Penriff' chant wouldn't go astray ;)

Was anyone else at the game when we collapsed the fence at Penriff? From memory that was when Purtell scored the slowest intercept of all time against us.

It's less to do with them being a bogey team and more to do with them being a very very good team and us being a mediocre to bad team over that 14 game period.

We also have a pretty decent record against them in Melbourne in recent times, with a four game winning streak against them at AAMI Park. (their last two home wins against us were played in Brisbane)

Origin snub fuelling Jack Wighton’s fire

Jack Wighton admits his snubbing from NSW’s State of Origin game three side lit a fire in him as he leads Canberra’s NRL finals push.

“Things like that always light a fire in the belly, you’re always trying to be better,” he said. “Full credit to everybody that got picked in that (NSW) side, a great bunch of blokes that tried their guts out and full respect, but it always lights a little fire and I’m just running with that.

Fired up Jack Wighton determined to lead Canberra Raiders past depleted Penrith Panthers

Canberra star Jack Wighton will enter Saturday's clash with Penrith with a fire in his belly, but it won't be driven by a desire to reignite his feud with Panthers centre Stephen Crichton.

"Through the Origin period, they missed their whole spine and more and they still blew teams off the park," Wighton said. "We know they're going to turn up, they're the reigning premiers.

Raiders star Josh Papalii backs NRL to stamp out dangerous tackling techniques

Raiders forward Josh Papalii has backed the NRL to continue to protect player safety amid a recent increase in hip-drop tackles.

"I've suffered a few hip drops and I've done a few myself, it's not something you practice, it just happens. I think the NRL are looking after players pretty nicely, it's a step in the right direction."

Canberra Raiders fans told to avoid ticket scalpers ahead of Penrith Panthers clash

The Canberra Raiders have warned fans they risk being denied entry to a blockbuster clash with the Penrith Panthers if they buy tickets from scalpers, who are advertising some tickets for more than double their original price.

"Do not get caught out purchasing tickets from unauthorised sites such as Viagogo and The Ticket Merchant as you may be denied entry," the Raiders said on Facebook.

The Panthers will be a real test for the Raiders forwards. They are a very patient team and with both halves out I think will play a pretty simple game. Bash through the middle, kick to corners and wait for the Raiders to make errors and invite them into the match. O’Sullivan has a pretty handy kicking game and I think they will rely on him to do it effectively so kick pressure will be vital.

Eels did a good job on James Fisher-Harris and limited his impact he will be looking to bounce back. Tapine would want to step up and get one over his NZ teammate so I’m thinking this will be a great battle.

The Raiders yardage game has improved dramatically the past few weeks albeit against pretty poor opponents. If Rapana and Cotric can get the set starts going and both run for close to 200m I give us a chance.

Yes, I'd be surprised if Penrith threw anything spectacularly complex at us. The key is clearly containing their forwards and not gifting them good field position with errors.

Why Raiders have been 'waiting' all year for spiteful clash with Panthers

Canberra are planning an ambush on premiers Penrith in the ACT on Saturday night, fuelled by simmering bad blood between the two clubs. The Raiders don't like the Panthers as a result of incidents on and off the field over the past two seasons.

"We don't like their attitude - plain and simple," a senior Raiders officials told me. "We have been waiting for this game and are planning an ambush. They are arrogant and we aim to bring them down a few pegs."

Canberra Raiders prepare ‘ambush’ for ‘arrogant’ Penrith Panthers as rivalry boils over

The Raiders will welcome the Penrith Panthers to the nation’s capital for the first time in four years – where an increasingly heated recent rivalry will come to the fore once again.

Since the Panthers last visited Canberra in 2018, tensions between the two sides have ratcheted up multiple levels thanks to a series of incidents, from Panthers fans mocking the Green Machine’s famous Viking Clap on Penrith soil, to the heated fracas after Raiders prop Joe Tapine was caught in the middle of a Panthers try celebration.
