Warriors and Bushies draw after nail-biting affair

A Bayley Graham hat trick has saved the day for the Warriors, after a nail biting 22-all draw against Tuggeranong. The West Belconnen Warriors and Tuggeranong Bushrangers could not be separated on Sunday, with Bayley Graham saving the day for the Warriors, locking it up at 22-all in the dying stages.

Rival Canberra Raiders Cup clubs back Queanbeyan Blues to rebound

A pair of Canberra Rugby League stars have backed the local competition to continue growing despite the challenges currently facing the Queanbeyan Blues, who forfeited yesterday's clash with the Belconnen Sharks.

"It was struggling a bit there after COVID," Warriors captain-coach Ryan McQueen said. "Some clubs are still struggling a bit but it's rugby league. It's going to keep fighting through, so it'll be alright." McQueen's comments came after his side scored late to secure a tense 22-all draw with Tuggeranong on Sunday afternoon.

2023 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 13 Preview

Image

Round 13 of the Canberra Raiders Cup features the top four clash between the Tuggeranong Bushrangers and Belconnen Sharks at Greenway on Saturday.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers v Belconnen Sharks

Last Sunday's clash between the Warriors and Bushrangers at Kippax ended in a hard fought, 22-all, draw. Five eighth Bayley Graham completed a hat trick late in the match - with Brandon Withers' conversion levelling the scores. But the home team might still be ruing a decision to go for a try, rather than a field goal, in the dying moments.

The Warriors were first to score in the fifth minute through Graham, after a Bushies' error at their own end offered up an early opportunity. Tuggeranong hit back quickly, with winger Tyler Evans chasing a cross field grubber from Brigham Moeakiola in the 10th minute, grounding it in the corner. They followed up with a try from the kickoff. Bushrangers half Blake Murray made the initial break, before offloading to Moeakiola. Hooker Liam Oakley finished it off, scoring under the posts. It gave Tuggeranong a 10-6 lead at the 15 minute mark.

In the 24th minute, a grubber to the corner from Bayley Graham set up a try for Brandon Withers. But the Bushrangers again edged to the lead in the 31st minute, when winger Jack Davison picked up a Darby Medlyn pass off the ground, to score out wide. The visitors led 16-10 at the break.

It took until the 56th minute for the next try to be posted. Warriors fullback and coach Ryan McQueen got the break through, his short kick to the in goal setting up Bayley Maher for his second try. 16-16. Liam Oakley delivered a six point lead for Tuggeranong in the 65th minute, when a quick play the ball from Medlyn allowed the dummy half to dive over from close range.

The Warriors declined a late shot at penalty goal from in front of the posts - and could not score in the ensuing set. But they did not give up. A red zone set in the 77th minute saw the Warriors spread the ball one way, then the other, until Graham found the weakness in the line. 22-22. There was still two minutes on the clock - and the Warriors had one last shot at breaking the deadlock. A field goal was on offer, but it was not to be.

The Queanbeyan Blues forfeited to the Belconnen Sharks in Round 12, with the Blues unable to field a full first grade team due to injuries. It means the Sharks come into this week's match against the Bushrangers after a two week break. Prior to the bye, they had won three straight - over the Magpies (42-14), Warriors (26-10) and Bulls (34-32). It looked like the Bushrangers had got themselves back on track when they won big over the Bulldogs (46-6) a couple of weeks ago. But their recent form line does not look great overall.

My tip: The numbers favour the Sharks, but there's not a huge gap between these teams. Then there's the recent return of Zac Saddler to the Bushies from France, plus the form of players like Medlyn, Oakley and Davison... I'm leaning towards Tuggeranong at home.

Season record: Bushrangers 5 and 4, 2 draws (4th, +6)
Sharks 7 and 3 (2nd, +8)
Form: Bushrangers LLDWD
Sharks LWWWW*
Attacking record: Bushrangers 25, Sharks 22 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bushrangers 24, Sharks 21 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 4 Bushrangers 28 defeated Sharks 22 at NSWRL HQ, Bruce
2022 Round 12 Sharks 22 defeated Bushrangers 16 at NSWRL HQ, Bruce
2022 Round 4 Bushrangers 52 defeated Sharks 16 at Greenway Oval

Woden Rams v Gungahlin Bulls

The Woden Rams are coming off a 24-6 loss to the Bulldogs at Goulburn last Saturday. The match was played in wet, cold conditions - and there were plenty of errors. The home team produced an early try, with Dillon Rota storming through out wide in the sixth minute. But the Dogs could not cross again until the 38th minute. Ron Leapai showed why he's one of the best forwards in the competition, when he charged at the line from 10 metres out, breaking tackles along the way. He just kept going and going until he got there. It was 12-0 in favour of the Bulldogs at half time.

The Rams got one back in the 49th minute, when five eighth Adam Lucas kicked ahead and regathered - and offloaded to winger Liam Shaw on the outside. It was exciting play, but it was about as good as it got for Woden. An error in goal from the Rams allowed Bulldogs benchie Mitchell Anderson to score in the 54th minute. And another strong run from Leapai saw him complete a double with just over 10 minutes remaining. It sealed the match.

Meanwhile, the Bulls came up with a 28-12 win over the Yass Magpies at Gungahlin. The Bulls led 12-6 at half time, after first half tries for the home team to fullback Travis Vawdon and centre Zac Dickason. The Magpies got themselves right back into the contest with a try to half Brandon Thomson under the posts in the 44th minute. But five minutes later, a try from close range to Jade Schumacher put the Bulls back in front. Then a little spell of magic from Dickason saw him score two tries in the space of three minutes. A kick ahead from Bobby Roberts set up Dickason's second of the game - while it was some great stepping from the centre that produced the hat trick. There were no further points in the final 20 minutes, as the rain came down.

My tip: This is a clash between fifth and seventh - but most of the numbers clearly point to a win for the Rams at home.

Season record: Rams 6 and 5 (5th, -8)
Bulls 3 and 8 (7th, -80)
Form: Rams WWWLL
Bulls LLLLW
Attacking record: Rams 21, Bulls 21 points scored per match
Defensive record: Rams 22, Bulls 29 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 4 Rams 12 defeated Bulls 10 at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval
2022 Round 17 Bulls 28 defeated Rams 12 at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval
2022 Round 8 Rams 22 defeated Bulls 14 at Phillip Oval

Yass Magpies v Queanbeyan Kangaroos

First versus last. The Queanbeyan Kangaroos are undefeated in 2023. They have won 10 in a row and they are the No. 1 team in attack and defence. They come into this clash with the Magpies fresh off the bye. If the Magpies can win this one, it'll be the upset of the year.

The Magpies have shown some promise at times this season - and coach Adam Kyle has definitely strengthened the squad. Unfortunately for Kyle, he's lost some of his new recruits mid season. Five eighth Tremayne Chatfield headed north for another opportunity earlier this year. Yass was able to sign Newcastle half Brandon Thompson at the end of May - and he's starting to have an impact. Then this week, news broke that second rower Aublix Tawha has joined Queensland Cup team, the Redcliffe Dolphins.

On the positive side of the ledger, the Magpies have just announced that Adam Kyle will remain as head coach in 2024. It brings stability to the club and allows Kyle to continue his rebuilding work.

My tip: Kangaroos.

Season record: Magpies 2 and 9 (9th, -134)
Kangaroos 10 and 0 (1st, +258)
Form: Magpies LLLWL
Kangaroos WWWWW
Attacking record: Magpies 20, Kangaroos 37 points scored per match
Defensive record: Magpies 32, Kangaroos 11 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 4 Kangaroos 24 defeated Magpies 16 at Freebody Oval
2022 Round 15 Magpies 22 defeated Kangaroos 18 at Walker Park
2022 Round 6 Kangaroos 20 defeated Magpies 12 at Freebody Oval

Goulburn Bulldogs v West Belconnen Warriors

The Bulldogs host the 2022 premiers on Saturday. It's not been an easy year for the Warriors and they now sit in sixth place on the ladder. But they are only one competition point adrift of the third placed Bulldogs, and they still have a game in hand. So they are still well in the hunt for a top four place. The numbers suggest this will be a very close contest. While the Bulldogs have the better attacking record, the Warriors have the better defence. It should be a tighter game than we saw in Round 4 at Kippax.

My tip: Goulburn just have the edge at home.

Season record: Bulldogs 6 and 5 (3rd, +38)
Warriors 5 and 4, 1 draw (6th, +30)
Form: Bulldogs WWLLW
Warriors WLLWD
Attacking record: Bulldogs 28, Warriors 23 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulldogs 24, Warriors 20 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 4 Bulldogs 30 defeated Warriors 18 at Raiders Belconnen

Bushrangers positioned well in race to the Canberra Raiders Cup finals

The Bushrangers reigned in a clash between two finals contenders with a 30-14 win over the Belconnen Sharks at Greenway Oval on Saturday.

"We're obviously happy with how everything is going. It's been a bit hot and cold at times, but it's just about getting the right blokes on the park and we're starting to do that," Medlyn said. "Getting Zac [Saddler] back really helps, he's been over in France. We're a different side when we've got him, just a lot more go-forward.

Bushies skip away from Sharks in a top-four thriller

A strong second-half performance from the Tuggeranong Bushrangers proved to be the difference in a back-and-forth game as they defeated the Belconnen United Sharks 30-14 at Greenway Oval on Saturday. Hooker Liam Oakley was the highlight of the Bushrangers’ side as he scored 14 points for his team.

2023 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 14 Preview

Image

The undefeated Queanbeyan Kangaroos reign supreme on top of the ladder, with four more wins than any team in the competition. With five rounds left in the regular season, five teams are now fighting it out for the other three places in the top four. Only two competition points separate the second place Tuggeranong Bushrangers and the sixth placed Goulburn Bulldogs. So Saturday's clash between the Dogs and the fourth placed Sharks will have a big bearing on the finals hopes of both teams.

Belconnen Sharks v Goulburn Bulldogs

The Sharks are coming off a 30-14 defeat at the hands of the Bushrangers last Saturday at Greenway. It was a tight first half, with the Sharks leading 14-12 at half time. But it was all the Bushies in the second half - at least on the score board. Tries to forward leader Zac Saddler, hooker Liam Oakley and winger Brigham Moeakiola in the second forty sealed the deal for the home team. The Sharks had plenty of opportunity, but they looked a bit rusty after a two week break - and they just couldn't find the right final plays. Sharks winger Josh Webb bagged a double in the first half.

The Bulldogs also suffered a loss in their last start, falling to the Warriors, 24-18, at Goulburn. The Dogs led 12-10 at the break. Five minutes into the second half, Warriors player-coach Ryan McQueen got a one one one strip on Dillon Rota - and he only had to run two metres to score. It was his second four pointer of the match. In the 52nd minute, Bullogs centre Bradley Arnall got one back - delivering a two point lead for Goulburn. But a try to Warriors hooker Harry Brown under the posts, mid way through the second half, proved to be decisive. It was a simple run from dummy half.

The contest between these teams earlier this year went in favour of the Sharks at Goulburn - but it was a narrow two point win. This one is difficult to tip, with the Bulldogs having the better attack and the Sharks the slightly better defence. If they fire, both teams have key playmakers to make the difference - the Cornish brothers for Goulburn and Zac Patch and Matt Woolnough for the Sharks.

My tip: Tough to call, but I'll go with the visiting Bulldogs.

Season record: Sharks 7 and 4 (4th, -8)
Bulldogs 6 and 6 (6th, +32)
Form: Sharks WWWW*L
Bulldogs WLLWL
Attacking record: Sharks 21, Bulldogs 27 points scored per match
Defensive record: Sharks 22, Bulldogs 24 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 5 Sharks 26 defeated Bulldogs 24 at Goulburn Arena
2022 Round 10 Sharks 54 defeated Bulldogs 10 at Goulburn Arena
2022 Round 1 Bulldogs 38 defeated Sharks 14 at NSWRL HQ, Bruce

* Match forfeited by the Queanbeyan Blues to the Belconnen Sharks.

West Belconnen Warriors v Queanbeyan Kangaroos

The fifth placed Warriors have shown some better form in their past three matches - winning two and drawing one. But they face a very difficult assignment against Sam Williams' undefeated Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Kippax this week. The Roos have the best attack and defence by a big margin. They beat the Yass Magpies 64-10 at Walker Park last weekend - scoring nine tries in a dominant display. Until they show some sort of frailty, it's hard to tip against them.

My tip: Kangaroos.

Season record: Warriors 6 and 4, 1 draw (5th, +36)
Kangaroos 11 and 0 (1st, +312)
Form: Warriors LLWDW
Kangaroos WWWWW
Attacking record: Warriors 22, Kangaroos 39 points scored per match
Defensive record: Warriors 20, Kangaroos 11 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 5 Kangaroos 44 defeated Warriors 6 at Freebody Oval
2022 Round 17 Kangaroos 22 defeated Warriors 20 at Freebody Oval
2022 Round 8 Warriors 16 defeated Kangaroos 10 at Raiders Belconnen

Queanbeyan Blues v Woden Rams

The Queanbeyan Blues had to take the difficult decision to forfeit their last scheduled match against the Belconnen Sharks. They simply could not field a team due to injuries, and the unavailability of some of their younger contingent. Coach Simon Woolford doesn't have a reserve grade outfit to draw upon this year - and it is tough times for the club that is usually a powerhouse of the competition. After last weekend's bye, Woolford expects he'll have enough players back to compete in the clash with the Rams.

The Rams led 40-10 at half time in last weekend's clash with the Gungahlin Bulls - and went on to win, 50-28, at Phillip Oval. Fullback Liam Shaw and second rower Sean Maloney both scored doubles for the home team, while Bulls second rower Albert Watego produced a hat trick. Woden coach Billy Thomson would have been happy with the nine tries scored - but not the five conceded. However, the Rams should still be too strong for the battered Blues.

My tip: Rams.

Season record: Blues 2 and 8, 1 draw (8th, -118)
Rams 7 and 5 (3rd, +14)
Form: Blues WLDLL*
Rams WWLLW
Attacking record: Blues 19, Rams 23 points scored per match
Defensive record: Blues 30, Rams 22 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 5 Rams 26 defeated Blues 16 at Phillip Oval
2022 Round 10 Blues 26 defeated Rams 16 at Seiffert Oval
2022 Round 1 Rams 16 defeated Blues 6 at Phillip Oval

* Match forfeited by the Queanbeyan Blues to the Belconnen Sharks.

Gungahlin Bulls v Tuggeranong Bushrangers

The Bulls are now out of finals contention, having won just three matches so far this season. The second placed Bushrangers, however, are on a three game winning streak, and have everything to play for in this one. Almost all the numbers say Tuggeranong. The ray of hope for the Bulls is their big, 42-16, defeat of the Bushrangers earlier in the year. But it's hard to see the Bushies losing in this contest.

My tip: Bushrangers.

Season record: Bulls 3 and 9 (7th, -102)
Bushrangers 6 and 4, 2 draws (2nd, +22)
Form: Bulls LLLWL
Bushrangers LDWWW
Attacking record: Bulls 22, Bushrangers 25 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulls 30, Bushrangers 23 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 5 Bulls 42 defeated Bushrangers 16 at Greenway Oval

Woden Rams lean on Canberra Raiders youth for late-season charge

Mitch Souter scored two tries in Woden Valley's heated 28-26 win in round 14 of the Canberra Raiders Cup on Saturday afternoon, denying Queanbeyan Blues a late comeback at Seiffert Oval.

"You could say he's the lighthouse out the front at the moment," Rams coach Billy Thomson said. "He controls our side really well, and he's well in front of the league as far as direction goes. He is outstanding for us."

2023 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 15 Preview

Image

The Canberra Raiders Cup heads into the home straight this weekend. Four rounds left until the finals and six teams vying for a top four spot. It's been season over for the Bulls, Blues and Magpies for a while. And it is looking tough for the fifth placed Warriors and sixth placed Bulldogs.

At the top of the ladder, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos reign supreme. Undefeated and eight competition points ahead of the nearest chasers. Can they go through the season without a loss? The likes of the Bushrangers, Sharks and Rams will be doing their best to shatter that particular dream of the men in maroon. The Bushies get their first chance this Saturday at Greenway, in the match of the round.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers v Queanbeyan Kangaroos

First versus second. The Bushrangers host the undefeated Kangaroos, and will be hoping to end the 12 game winning streak of Sam Williams' Queanbeyan outfit. The Roos have almost certainly secured the minor premiership. Only the Sharks have the vaguest of mathematical possibilities of taking it from them. Win on Saturday and the Kangaroos will have secured it. The Bushies are level with the Rams and Sharks on 16 competition points, and this game is crucial in their bid lock down a top two finish. So a lot is at stake.

The West Belconnen Warriors were the Kangaroos' latest victims. They lost, 26-16, to the Kangaroos in Round 14 at Kippax. It was close at half time, with both teams scoring a solitary try - Brandon Withers for the Warriors and Sam Williams for the Roos. A penalty goal ensured the home team took an 8-6 lead to the break. However, three try tries in the space of 10 minutes - to Queanbeyan's Sia Soliola, Robert Sheffield and Steven Numambo - saw the game spiral out of control for the Warriors. It was 24-8 at the 50 minute mark. Late tries for West Belconnen's Kylan Edwards and James Garner were not enough.

The Bushrangers produced a 32-16 win over the Gungahlin Bulls in their last outing. They took a 22-0 lead after 33 minutes, scoring four straight tries. The Bulls got one back through winger Jesse Croker just before half time, off the back of a Bobby Roberts kick to the corner. Second half tries to Tuggeranong winger Michael Mitchell and captain Darby Medlyn maintained control for the Bushrangers. Mitchell ended with a double, as did Croker.

This should be a terrific clash - and if you can't get to the ground, you can watch the free live stream. I guess the Kangaroos have to lose sometime - and with the likes of Medlyn and Zac Saddler leading from up front, the Bushrangers are certainly capable of an upset. The Bushies haven't lost since Round 9, when the Rams produced a two point victory. They have come close, with draws against the Blues (32-32) and Warriors (22-22). But the Kangaroos have the best attacking and defensive records in the competition - by a long way. It's impossible to tip against them.

My tip: Kangaroos.

Season record: Bushrangers 7 and 4, 2 draws (2nd, +38)
Kangaroos 12 and 0 (1st, +322)
Form: Bushrangers DWDWW
Kangaroos WWWWW
Attacking record: Bushrangers 26, Kangaroos 38 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bushrangers 23, Kangaroos 11 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 8 Kangaroos 44 defeated Bushrangers 10 at Freebody Oval
2022 Round 10 Kangaroos 27 defeated Bushrangers 19 at Freebody Oval
2022 Round 1 Bushrangers 40 defeated Kangaroos 6 at Greenway Oval

Queanbeyan Blues v West Belconnen Warriors

This is a re-match of the 2022 Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final - a game won by the Warriors. But life has been a bit tougher for both teams in 2023. The Blues are out of finals contention, while the fifth placed Warriors are three competition points adrift of three teams above them. The Warriors are coming off a loss to the Kangaroos - and must win this one if they are to stay in touch with the top four.

The Queanbeyan Blues have long been the powerhouse team of the competition. But they have struggled for numbers in 2023 and they were unable to field a reserve grade team. Add in some injuries and they were forced to forfeit their Round 12 match to the Sharks. In their last outing, they suffered a narrow, 28-26, loss to the Rams at Seiffert. The Blues trailed 16-8 at half time, with winger George Morseau and Charlie Woolford scoring tries for the home team. It was a real battle in the second half, with Woolford getting his second try of the game with seven minutes left. But the Blues fell just short. In-form hooker Mitch Souter bagged a double for Woden.

My tip: Warriors.

Season record: Blues 2 and 9, 1 draw (8th, -120)
Warriors 6 and 5, 1 draw (5th, +26)
Form: Blues LDLL*L
Warriors LWDWL
Attacking record: Blues 20, Warriors 22 points scored per match
Defensive record: Blues 30, Warriors 20 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 8 Blues 20 defeated Warriors 18 at Raiders Belconnen
2022 Grand Final Warriors 38 defeated Blues 24 at Seiffert Oval
2022 Round 18 Warriors 26 defeated Blues 10 at Seiffert Oval
2022 Round 9 Blues 46 defeated Warriors 18 at Raiders Belconnen

* Match forfeited by the Queanbeyan Blues to the Belconnen Sharks.

Yass Magpies v Belconnen Sharks

After some promising signs, 2023 has proved to be another tough year for the Magpies. They've been a bit unlucky, losing a couple of their best players mid season to Queensland Cup clubs. They have had two weeks off since their 64-10 loss to the Kangaroos at Walker Park. The No. 1 team ran in 11 tries in that match, with the only tries for the home team coming from centre Varcon Ratima and Waisale Nayavucere. They have posted only two wins this year, their last coming against the Blues (36-20) in Round 11. They next host the fourth placed Sharks.

The Belconnen Sharks produced a 24-16 win over the Goulburn Bulldogs in their last outing. Goulburn took a 10-6 lead to the half time break - and went further ahead one minute into the second forty, with half Mitch Cornish scoring from a scrum play. 16-6. Enter Sharks half Matt Woolnough. He set up two tries in the space of six minutes - for winger Josh Webb and centre Jay Slavin - and the home team was back in front with 20 minutes remaining. And then in the final stages, a Jake Hawkins 40/20 kick set up the match sealer for Webb.

The fourth placed Sharks will have plenty of incentive to notch up a win in this game - and it's hard to see them losing.

My tip: Sharks.

* Match forfeited by the Queanbeyan Blues to the Belconnen Sharks.

Goulburn Bulldogs v Gungahlin Bulls

Both of these teams are sitting on back to back losses. The Bulldogs are in sixth place on the ladder, four points outside the top four. So they will be desperate for a victory at home in this contest. The Bulls side has plenty of talent in their squad. They added premiership winning half Bobby Roberts in the off season, but for some reason, they just haven't clicked. However, all the numbers say Goulburn - and this is a must win for the Dogs.

My tip: Bulldogs.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers defeat the undefeated Queanbeyan Kangaroos in the Canberra Raiders Cup game of the year

The Bushrangers showed some real grit in the second half to close out the game 18-17 and hand the Kangaroos their first loss of the season.

It was the Kangaroos who fired out of the blocks from the kickoff, asserting themselves over the Bushrangers making 70 metres off the first set.

2023 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 16 Preview

Image

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos have finally been toppled, falling to the Tuggeranong Bushrangers last Saturday. The one point loss for Sam Williams' men in maroon has meant that they haven't quite secured the minor premiership. Only the Sharks take it from them... but it is only a mathematical possibility. A seriously remote possibility.

What would it take? The Sharks would have to win all of their final games - against the Rams, Kangaroos and Warriors - while the Kangaroos would have to lose all of their final three games. The Roos are yet to face the Bulls, Sharks and Blues. But then there's the points difference. The Kangaroos have a positive points differential of 321, the Sharks 12. The Sharks are not overcoming that in the space of three games.

In any case, if the Kangaroos can get the win this weekend against the seventh placed Bulls, the minor premiership is theirs. No shadow of a doubt.

There is a more serious battle still going on for a top four finish - and for second place. The top four teams play finals. A top two finish is important - as those teams get a second bite at the cherry, should they lose in week one of the finals.

The second placed Bushrangers can't pick up competition points this weekend. They have the bye, and in the Canberra Raiders Cup, you don't get two points for the bye. But the third placed Sharks and fourth placed Rams certainly can pick up points. And they face each other on Saturday in the match of the round.

Goulburn Bulldogs v Queanbeyan Blues

The Bulldogs have only two matches remaining - against the Blues on Saturday and the Magpies in Round 18. They are two competition points adrift of the top four. So realistically they must win both games to keep any hope of playing finals alive.

The Bulldogs put on 50 points against the Bulls last Saturday at Goulburn - scoring nine tries to one. It was 18-4 in favour of the home team at half time, but it got a bit ugly for the Bulls in the second half. Gungahlin's goal line defence was brittle, with a number of easy crash over tries. Winger William Russell got a hat trick. His first try, mid way through the first half, was real highlight - an intercept and a 100 metre run. It was an impressive result for the Dogs, given that Tyler Cornish was missing. He suffered an injury in the previous round's clash with the Sharks. But brother Mitch Cornish was still there to steer the team around. 50-4 was the final score.

The poor 'ol Queanbeyan Blues suffered a last gasp loss to the West Belconnen Warriors on Saturday. Who'd have thought we'd be saying poor 'ol Blues a year ago - when they were on a path to the Grand Final? But it has been a tough year for the Queanbeyan outfit, often struggling for numbers. They have nothing left to play for but pride.

My tip: Bulldogs.

Season record: Bulldogs 7 and 7 (6th, +70)
Blues 2 and 10, 1 draw (8th, -126)
Form: Bulldogs LWLLW
Blues DLL*LL
Attacking record: Bulldogs 28, Blues 19 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulldogs 23, Blues 29 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 7 Bulldogs 46 defeated Blues 26 at Seiffert Oval
2022 Round 16 Blues 27 defeated Bulldogs 22 at Goulburn Arena
2022 Round 7 Blues 41 defeated Bulldogs 28 at Seiffert Oval

* Match forfeited by the Queanbeyan Blues to the Belconnen Sharks.

Gungahlin Bulls v Queanbeyan Kangaroos

Undefeated no longer. On Saturday, the Kangaroos and the Bushrangers produced the match of the year so far - with the Bushies halting the 12 game winning streak of the Queanbeyan outfit. With 10 minutes remaining, the match was level at 16 all. Kangaroos captain-coach Sam Williams stepped forward and kicked a field goal. Made it look easy. And it seemed like the the visitors had taken the upper hand. But soon after, former Raiders and Queanbeyan forward Sia Soliola gave away a penalty - for not standing square at marker. Liam Oakley landed the penalty goal - and that was the match winner. 18-17.

It may well be the loss that the Kangaroos had to have. And better to have it now, than during the finals. They next travel to Gungahlin for a clash with the Bulls. The Bulls struggled against the Bulldogs last weekend, and it is difficult to see the Kangaroos losing this week.

My tip: Kangaroos.

Season record: Bulls 3 and 11 (7th, -164)
Kangaroos 12 and 1 (1st, +321)
Form: Bulls LWLLL
Kangaroos WWWWL
Attacking record: Bulls 20, Kangaroos 37 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulls 32, Kangaroos 12 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 7 Kangaroos 20 defeated Bulls 0 at Freebody Oval
2022 Round 16 Kangaroos 30 defeated Bulls 26 at Freebody Oval
2022 Round 7 Kangaroos 24 defeated Bulls 22 at Gungahlin Enclosed

Belconnen Sharks v Woden Rams

The Sharks are coming off a 28-16 win over the last placed Yass Magpies last weekend. It was six tries to three. The Sharks went to a 14-0 lead at the 25 minute mark, after tries to winger Josh Webb, Raiders junior Tate Rhea and five eighth Matt Woolnough. Woolnough's try was the result of a brilliant individual run off a scrum play.

The Magpies did well to stay in the game, posting two tries just before the break. Winger Richard Maher went over out wide in the 37th minute. They followed up in the final seconds of the first half, with centre Varcon Ratima scoring in the opposite corner. 14-10 at halftime.

Ten minutes into the second half, the Magpies took a two point lead, after winger Liam Grame produced a length of the field intercept try. But the Sharks were stronger in the final stages, scoring three tries in the final 20 minutes.

The Sharks have a decent looking form line. They have lost once in their past six games - to the Bushrangers in Round 13 (30-14). However, they've had a relatively easy draw during that stretch. In addition, they lost to the Rams (32-4) back in Round 7.

The Rams will be fresh after last week's bye. They beat the Blues in their last outing at Seiffert - but only by two points (28-26). They've also had a couple of recent losses to the Kangaroos (38-18) at Freebody and the Bulldogs (24-6) at Goulburn. The numbers for these two teams are very similar, with the Sharks probably a tad in front overall. But there really isn't much in it.

My tip: Flip of the coin and the result earlier this year is the decisive factor for me. Rams.

Season record: Sharks 9 and 4 (3rd, +12)
Rams 8 and 5 (4th, +16)
Form: Sharks WW*LWW
Rams WLLWW
Attacking record: Sharks 22, Rams 24 points scored per match
Defensive record: Sharks 21, Rams 22 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 7 Rams 32 defeated Sharks 4 at Phillip Oval
2022 Round 16 Rams 36 defeated Sharks 22 at NSWRL HQ, Bruce
2022 Round 7 Rams 28 defeated Sharks 18 at Phillip Oval

* Match forfeited by the Queanbeyan Blues to the Belconnen Sharks.

West Belconnen Warriors v Yass Magpies

The Warriors had to overcome an 18-12 deficit at half time, in order to defeat the Queanbeyan Blues at Seiffert last Saturday. The Blues scored four tries in the first half. But the Warriors produced the better finish. Raiders junior and Warriors forward Elvis Nauer-Wood barged his way over the line in the 64th minute. That saw West Belconnen draw level. Then with just two minutes remaining, Brandon Withers intercepted a stray pass from the Blues, and he ran 25 metres to the line. The try from Withers proved to be the match winner - along with his four goals. Final score, 24-18.

The victory kept the Warriors in the hunt for a top four place. They are fifth, but are only one competition point behind the fourth placed Rams. The face the Magpies, Rams and Sharks in their final three games. The Warriors just have to keep winning. While the Magpies showed spirit last weekend, it is season on the line for the 2022 premiers. The Warriors should be too strong.

My tip: Warriors.

Season record: Warriors 7 and 5, 1 draw (5th, +32)
Magpies 2 and 11 (9th, -200)
Form: Warriors WDWLW
Magpies LWLLL
Attacking record: Warriors 22, Magpies 19 points scored per match

Queanbeyan Kangaroos and former Canberra Raiders forward Sia Soliola opens up on reasons behind move to Newcastle

Sia Soliola loves Canberra. But he loves his family more. It's why he's moving to Newcastle so he and his family can "make some memories" while they can, with a sick father-in-law the catalyst for moving closer to the rest of the family. But his Queanbeyan Kangaroos opponents will have to wait a little longer before they can breathe a sigh of relief at the sight of his back. He'll see out the season with the high-flying Kangaroos.

Sharks’ forward Sonny Tupuola lead from the front with his damaging runs, capped his incredible performance off with a try to seal the win.

2023 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 17 Preview

Image

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos are the Canberra Raiders Cup minor premiers for 2023. They sealed it in style with a big win over the Bulls at Gungahlin last Saturday afternoon.

With two rounds remaining, there are five other teams vying for the three places in the finals still up for grabs. The Sharks are sitting in second place at present. But a top two finish is anything but safe. They meet the Kangaroos on Saturday in a top of the table clash - and then the Warriors in Round 18.

This weekend's clash between the Rams and the Warriors also has a huge bearing on the battle for a top four spot. The Warriors are in fourth, the Rams in sixth. Woden is just one competition point behind. But a win for the Warriors will mean the end of the Rams' bid for a finals place. This will be the featured live stream game on Saturday.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers v Yass Magpies

The Yass Magpies fell to their fourth straight loss on Sunday at Kippax, defeated by the Warriors, 35-18. Almost all the point scoring action took place in the first forty. The Warriors scored five tries in the first 30 minutes, but Yass kept themselves in the contest with two tries late in the half. First, prop Shaun Davis crashed over from dummy half, with just under 10 minutes to the break. A kick ahead from half Brandon Thompson for fullback Bayley Maher produced another four pointer - ensuring the Magpies trailed by just 10 points at half time.

Warriors second rower William Robb ran through some very poor Yass defence in the 43rd minute, scoring under the posts. That stretched the lead for the home team to 16 points - and that's how the score remained until five eighth Bayley Graham kicked a field goal with a couple of minutes left.

The Bushrangers are coming off the bye. So they should be fresh. The Magpies have only two wins to their name and are on a four game losing streak. It's hard to see anything other than a win for the Bushies in this one.

My tip: Bushrangers.

Season record: Bushrangers 8 and 4, 2 draws (3rd, +39)
Magpies 2 and 12 (9th, -217)
Form: Bushrangers WDWWW
Magpies WLLLL
Attacking record: Bushrangers 25, Magpies 19 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bushrangers 22, Magpies 34 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 6 Bushrangers 22 defeated Magpies 16 at Walker Park
2022 Round 14 Bushrangers 28 defeated Magpies 10 at Greenway Oval
2022 Round 5 Bushrangers 30 defeated Magpies 10 at Walker Park

Woden Rams v West Belconnen Warriors

The Rams went into last week's clash with the Sharks in fourth spot. But their 20-14 loss to the Belconnen outfit has meant they have fallen to sixth - with the Warriors jumping over them into the top four. It was a close contest, with the teams heading to the sheds locked up at 4 all at half time. The Sharks only took the lead for the first time near the 60 minute mark, after Raiders junior forward Tate Rhea charged through to score under the posts. And with two minutes remaining, Sharks second rower Sonny Tupuola ran wide to get the match sealer.

All the numbers show the Rams and Warriors are closely matched. They are separated by just one point on the competition ladder. They have both been a little inconsistent - but the Warriors have the better recent form line and a slightly better defensive record. That is enough to sway me to the visitors.

My tip: Warriors.

Season record: Rams 8 and 6 (6th, +10)
Warriors 8 and 5, 1 draw (4th, +49)
Form: Rams LLWWL
Warriors DWLWW
Attacking record: Rams 23, Warriors 23 points scored per match
Defensive record: Rams 22, Warriors 20 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 6 Warriors 22 defeated Rams 12 at Raiders Belconnen
2022 Major Semi Final Warriors 46 defeated Rams 10 at Raiders Belconnen
2022 Round 14 Rams 22 defeated Warriors 12 at Raiders Belconnen
2022 Round 5 Warriors 36 defeated Rams 20 at Phillip Oval

Queanbeyan Kangaroos v Belconnen Sharks

First versus second. Clearly the match of the round. Two weeks ago, the Kangaroos lost their first match of the season - going down to the Bushrangers by just a point. They were in no mood to mess around on Saturday against the Bulls. They ran out 58-14 winners over the Gungahlin outfit, scoring 11 tries in the process. Winger Matthew Wheatley and second rower Jesse Dent both bagged doubles - while Raiders junior forward Josh Pokoney got a double for the Bulls. The win secured the minor premiership for the Roos - and they will doubtless finish the season with the best attacking and defensive records by a very long way.

The Sharks have long been cellar dwellers in the competition, but the mid-season arrival of Zac Patch and Jake Hawkins last year sparked something. They missed the finals, finishing fifth, but are now poised to end their finals drought. It won't be easy going, as beating the Kangaroos is a very difficult task. But their destiny will be in their own hands when they face the Warriors in the final round of the regular season.

My tip: Kangaroos.

Season record: Kangaroos 13 and 1 (1st, +365)
Sharks 10 and 4 (2nd, +18)
Form: Kangaroos WWWLW
Sharks W*LWWW
Attacking record: Kangaroos 38, Sharks 22 points scored per match
Defensive record: Kangaroos 12, Sharks 21 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 6 Kangaroos 46 defeated Sharks 6 at NSWRL HQ, Bruce
2022 Round 11 Kangaroos 31 defeated Sharks 24 at Freebody Oval
2022 Round 2 Sharks 26 defeated Kangaroos 10 at NSWRL HQ, Bruce

* Match forfeited by the Queanbeyan Blues to the Belconnen Sharks.

Queanbeyan Blues v Gungahlin Bulls

Sadly, the Blues and Bulls are now only playing for pride. The Blues were thrashed by the Bulldogs, 54-6 in Goulburn on Saturday - with the home team running in nine tries. Bulldogs winger William Russell scored four tries on the day - a rare feat. Five eighth Mat Parsons was the only try scorer for the Blues. The Bulldogs are in fifth place on the ladder. But because they have a bye this week - and cannot pick up any competition points - their finals hopes are the slimmest of all the teams still in contention.

The Blues have not won since Round 8, when they beat the Warriors at Kippax, 20-18. Six games without a win, with one draw and a forfeit along the way. The Bulls are on a four game losing streak. The Bulls won the earlier encounter between these two clubs this year. Almost a flip of the coin, this one. I'll go with the home team.

My tip: Blues.

Season record: Blues 2 and 11, 1 draw (8th, -174)
Bulls 3 and 12 (7th, -208)
Form: Blues LL*LLL
Bulls WLLLL
Attacking record: Blues 18, Bulls 20 points scored per match
Defensive record: Blues 31, Bulls 34 points conceded per match

2023 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 18 Preview

Image

The top four in the 2023 Canberra Raiders Cup has been decided. The 2022 premiers, the West Belconnen Warriors, will have the chance to defend their title - after their victory over the Woden Rams last weekend. The result meant that the Bulldogs and Rams were both ruled out of finals contention.

The final round of the regular season is derby round. It is headlined by the top four clash between the Warriors and Sharks - which has a big bearing on the composition of the top four. A win for either team could see them take a top two spot - provided the Rams beat the Bushrangers. At the very least, the winner of the Belconnen derby will take third place.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos v Queanbeyan Blues

The Queanbeyan derby is almost always, eagerly anticipated. But this has been a the season from hell for Blues coach Simon Woolford and his team. They recently had to forfeit a match against the Sharks - as they were unable to field a full team. No reserve grade, injuries, players unavailable. They all piled up so the powerhouse club was forced to concede the two competition points. They finally broke through for a win last weekend against the Bulls - a team that has also been doing it tough in 2023.

In contrast, their cross town rivals have been dominant. They have lost only once in 2023 - by a single point, to the Bushrangers. They have outscored their opponents, in aggregate, by over 400 points. They are the No. 1 team in attack and defence, with no team to rival their record in either department. None within cooee. And they have already won the minor premiership.

Kangaroos captain-coach Sam Williams has told The Canberra Times that he hasn't been that happy with his team's recent form. But he was happy with the four tries fullback Kaine Pagura scored on his return from injury on Saturday.

"Kaine Pagura scored a couple of length-of-the-field tries in the first half that really set the tone for us," he said, after the win over the Sharks. "He was fantastic. It was good having him back on board. He was probably the best player for us."

This game will be played at Seiffert. The Roos should use this game to refamiliarise with the ground. Because I'll be shocked if they're not playing there on Grand Final day.

My tip: Kangaroos.

Season record: Kangaroos 14 and 1 (1st, +401)
Blues 3 and 11, 1 draw (7th, -177)
Form: Kangaroos WWLWW
Blues L*LLLW
Attacking record: Kangaroos 38, Blues 20 points scored per match
Defensive record: Kangaroos 12, Blues 31 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 9 Kangaroos 34 defeated Blues 14 at Seiffert Oval
2022 Round 14 Kangaroos 36 defeated Blues 22 at Freebody Oval
2022 Round 5 Blues 64 defeated Kangaroos 10 at Seiffert Oval

* Match forfeited by the Queanbeyan Blues to the Belconnen Sharks.

Woden Rams v Tuggeranong Bushrangers

The Bushrangers produced a dominant display on Saturday, defeating the Yass Magpies, 66-0, at Greenway. The Bushies scored 12 tries, with half Jayden McLachlan, centre Atini Tuialii and winger Jayden Pollard all getting doubles. Tuggeranong led 34-0 at half time, and the procession to the try line continued in the second half. The score line has done wonders for Tuggeranong's points differential - and that means they'll safely finish in second if they beat the Rams.

The Rams lost a tight match against the West Belconnen Warriors, 27-24, at Phillip. It was five tries each, but the Warriors just got home in the end. A Mitch Souter try in the 60th minute - the result of a quick dart from dummy half near the line - gave the Rams a 20-16 lead. A four pointer to West Belconnen five eighth Bayley Graham soon allowed the visitors to edge back in front, by two.

Then, with just three minutes remaining, a kick ahead from half Daniel Garner ended with the ball bouncing perfectly for winger Kylan Edwards - who offloaded to speedster Lekani Mpaso. He ran for 30, maybe 40 metres in a flash to score his second try of the match. Graham sealed the deal with a late field goal for the Warriors. But the Woden was not done. Rams second rower Luke Ellis scored in the final seconds - and the conversion attempt was declined in the hope of a Hail Mary play. But it was too late.

The Rams can't play finals, but they'll want to finish well. A win against the Bushrangers is not out of the question - with players like Mitch Souter in good form. But I think Tuggeranong has too much to play for in this one - and a bit too much power, thanks to a Medlyn and some Saddlers.

My tip: Bushrangers.

Season record: Rams 8 and 7 (6th, +7)
Bushrangers 9 and 4, 2 draws (2nd, +105)
Form: Rams LWWLL
Bushrangers DWWWW
Attacking record: Rams 23, Bushrangers 28 points scored per match
Defensive record: Rams 23, Bushrangers 21 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 9 Rams 24 defeated Bushrangers 22 at Greenway Oval
2022 Round 13 Bushrangers 20 defeated Rams 16 at Greenway Oval
2022 Round 3 Bushrangers 36 defeated Rams 6 at Phillip Oval

West Belconnen Warriors v Belconnen Sharks

The Sharks are coming off a heavy defeat at the hands of the Queanbeyan Kangaroos. The Sharks were missing more than a handful of players from the match, including player-coach Zac Patch. But, it still ended in the ugly score line of 44-8, in favour of the Kangaroos. Patch will be hoping to get some troops back for this game - as there is potentially a lot riding on it.

The Warriors have not had an easy year, but they have looked a bit more solid coming into the business end of the season. And the Warriors numbers look just a bit better overall - despite being one competition point behind the Sharks. I'm going to go with the Warriors in this one.

My tip: Warriors.

Season record: Warriors 9 and 5, 1 draw (4th, +52)
Sharks 10 and 5 (3rd, -18)
Form: Warriors WLWWW
Sharks WWWWL
Attacking record: Warriors 24, Sharks 21 points scored per match
Defensive record: Warriors 20, Sharks 22 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 9 Sharks 26 defeated Warriors 10 at NSWRL HQ, Bruce
2022 Round 13 Warriors 22 defeated Sharks 18 at NSWRL HQ, Bruce
2022 Round 3 Warriors 52 defeated Sharks 6 at Raiders Belconnen

Yass Magpies v Goulburn Bulldogs

The Magpies are on a five game losing streak and are coming off a 66 point thrashing from the Bushrangers. I can't see it getting much better for them on Saturday. The Bulldogs had to sit idly by last weekend, as the Warriors ended their finals chances. They will at least be fresh for this game, having had the bye in Round 17. They have scored 50 points or more in their past two matches - against the Bulls (50-4) and Blues (50-6). Hopefully the Magpies can make this match a contest. But the Bulldogs will be keen to lock in a fifth placed finish - and put on another big score to finish the year. I won't be surprised if they do.

My tip: Bulldogs.

Season record: Magpies 2 and 13 (9th, -283)
Bulldogs 8 and 7 (5th, +118)
Form: Magpies LLLLL
Bulldogs WLLWW
Attacking record: Magpies 18, Bulldogs 30 points scored per match
Defensive record: Magpies 36, Bulldogs 22 points conceded per match

Canberra Raiders Cup: Queanbeyan Blues lick wounds after nightmare season while minor premier Kangaroos roll on

On Saturday afternoon the Kangaroos were crowned minor premiers in the final round of the Canberra Raiders Cup, having dominated the first grade competition all season.

"Tough is an understatement," the Blues coach and Raiders legend Simon Woolford said. "I don't think there's been many times this year where we've had 17 players, so it's just been really hard. In the last month we've lost three guys to ACLs, which we couldn't afford to do at the start of the year, let alone three at once.

2023 Canberra Raiders Cup: Finals Week 1

Image

The finals are here in the Canberra Raiders Cup. There are two huge clashes this weekend. In the major semi-final, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos take on the Tuggeranong Bushrangers at Freebody Oval. The winner will go straight into the Grand Final. In the knockout semi-final, the West Belconnen Warriors take on the Belconnen Sharks at Kippax. It’s season over for the loser, while the winner goes to the Preliminary Final, to take on the loser of the clash between the Kangaroos and Bushrangers.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos v Tuggeranong Bushrangers

First versus second. The 2023 minor premiers, the Kangaroos, have won all but one of their regular season matches. They won those games by an incredible average of 29 points. Their only defeat involved a margin of just one point - and involved their opponent this week, the Bushrangers.

It was a match played in Round 15 - and was one of the games of the year. With 10 minutes remaining, it was all tied up at 16 apiece. 18-17.

The Kangaroos are coming off a 46-12 win over the Blues in the Queanbeyan derby. The Roos scored eight tries, with second rower Adam Barlow getting a double. They ended the regular season as the No. 1 attacking team, by a long way - scoring 150 more points in total than the second ranked Bulldogs. They finished as the No. 1 defensive team too. They have conceded 130 fewer points than the second ranked Warriors - and given up an average of only 12 points per game. Any NRL team would be proud of that defensive record.

The Bushrangers have been undefeated in their past eight matches. They last lost to the Rams, 24-22, back in Round 9 - but they were forced to two draws, one against the Blues in Round 10 (32-32) and the other against the Warriors in Round 12 (22-22).

The Bushrangers had a real scare at Phillip last weekend, just beating the Woden Rams, 40-38. Tuggeranong scored three tries inside the opening 15 minutes - and seemed well in control at half time, leading 24-10. But the Rams wouldn't go away. They opened the second half with two quick tries to centre Gideon Afemui and second rower Scott Swanson. They trailed by four. And then every time the Bushies scored, the Rams responded. They threatened right until the end. The Bushrangers just held on.

Bushrangers winger Jack Davison scored four tries, while his team mate, Deakin Bright bagged a double. Tuggeranong half Jayden McLachlan scored a terrific intercept try.

Sunday's clash at Freebody shapes as a classic. The Bushrangers have already shown they are capable of toppling the Roos - but it's impossible not to tip the Queanbeyan outfit in this one.

My tip: Kangaroos.

Season record: Kangaroos 15 and 1 (1st, +435)
Bushrangers 10 and 4, 2 draws (2nd, +107)
Form: Kangaroos WLWWW
Bushrangers WWWWW
Attacking record: Kangaroos 39, Bushrangers 29 points scored per match
Defensive record: Kangaroos 12, Bushrangers 22 points conceded per match
Last meetings: 2023 Round 15 Bushrangers 18 defeated Kangaroos 17 at Greenway Oval
2023 Round 8 Kangaroos 44 defeated Bushrangers 10 at Freebody Oval
2022 Round 10 Kangaroos 27 defeated Bushrangers 19 at Freebody Oval
2022 Round 1 Bushrangers 40 defeated Kangaroos 6 at Greenway Oval

West Belconnen Warriors v Belconnen Sharks

Groundhog Day. The Warriors and Sharks met just last weekend at Kippax - and now they'll do it all over again.

West Belconnen ran out 26-18 winners over the Sharks last Saturday, meaning they jumped over the top of the Sharks on the competition ladder.

With the game at Phillip running late, the Warriors would have been riding the Rams home. Because if the Rams had beaten the Bushrangers, the Warriors would have finished second - with a second bite at the cherry in the finals. But it was not to be.

The Round 18 match was a very tight affair. The teams went to the half time break with the scoreboard level at 12 all.

The Sharks went ahead near the 60 minute mark. A penalty goal to Jack Beagley right in front - after the Warriors failed to find 10 metres from a line drop out - saw the visiting team lead 14-12.

Soon after, Raiders junior forward, Elvis Nauer-Wood scored right beside the posts for the Warriors - taking advantage of a repeat set in the red zone. A Brandon Withers penalty goal in the 65th minute saw the Westies take a six point lead.

The Sharks fought back in the 73rd minute, with young centre Jacob Piper scoring out wide. However, Beagley could not convert. 20-18. It set up a thrilling finish. A spilled ball from the Sharks gave the Warriors an opportunity in the dying minutes - and Nauer-Wood sealed the match with his second try of the day.

It will no doubt be tight again this coming Saturday. Both teams have 10 wins, but, thanks to a draw, the Warriors have one fewer loss. The Warriors' numbers are just a bit better. They have lost just once in the second half of the season - to the Kangaroos (26-18) in Round 14.

It is exciting to see the Sharks playing finals, after so many years as the cellar dwellers. Coach Zac Patch returned to Canberra in the middle of last year from Mackay - and brought versatile playmaker Jake Hawkins with him. They deserve a lot of credit for turning the Sharks around. They are certainly capable of orchestrating a win this weekend - but the Warriors' recent form is looking a bit more solid.

My tip: Warriors.

Season record: Warriors 10 and 5, 1 draw (3rd, +60)
Sharks 10 and 5 (4th, -26)

Queanbeyan Kangaroos Sam Williams eyes Canberra Raiders Cup grand final after Les McIntyre Medal win

Les McIntryre Medal, coach of the year, and leading point scorer? Surely they were calling Sam Williams "Les" when he turned up to Freebody Oval this week.

"There was a few laughs around training," Williams said. "They're a pretty good bunch, I think they were pretty pleased for me. As a team, we probably felt someone deserved the award from our group and I was just the face of it."

Belconnen Sharks live on after Canberra Raiders Cup finals thriller

A 79th-minute conversion from Jack Beagley has secured a 30-28 win for the Belconnen Sharks over West Belconnen Warriors in the Canberra Raiders Cup minor semi-final.

"I thought we had it earlier when we were up by eight, then they clawed back into it," Sharks coach Zac Patch said. "It was a good fought game from both sides. That's what finals footy feels like. We collapsed a few times throughout the year but that was an 80-minute performance."

Canberra Raiders Cup minor semi-final: BELCONNEN SHARKS 30 (Darcy Leadbitter, Jay Slavin, Robert Aratangi, Jacob Piper, Jack Mills tries; Jack Beagley 5 goals) defeated WEST BELCONNEN WARRIORS 28 (Brandon Withers 3, Kylan Edwards, Harry Brown tries; Withers 4 goals) at Kippax.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Tuggeranong Bushrangers stun Queanbeyan Kangaroos to reach grand final

The Tuggeranong Bushrangers are 80 minutes away from lifting the Canberra Raiders Cup for the first time in the club's 20-year history.

"We're obviously one game further than last year, but last year the excitement of it all - making the finals - I think it got to a few blokes within the side," prop Zac Saddler said. "We haven't won a first grade comp in the 20 years they've been around, but within the playing group, we're not getting too far ahead of ourselves.

Canberra Raiders Cup major semi-final: TUGGERANONG BUSHRANGERS 18 (Jack Davison, Titan Sega, Bradley Buckley tries; Liam Oakley 3 goals) defeated QUEANBEYAN KANGAROOS 13 (Harry Quinlan 2 tries; Sam Williams 2 goals; Williams field goal) at Freebody Oval.
