AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders produced their best form of the Tarsha Gale Cup season when they defeated the Penrith Panthers on Saturday at Raiders Belconnen. Trailing 8-4 at half time, the Raiders opened up the attack in the second half, scoring five tries - and finishing 32-8 winners. Lara Cosgrove and Elise Simpson were the try scoring stars, but the forwards laid a great platform in the middle.

The Panthers opened the scoring, producing a try to hooker Montana McLean in the 3rd minute - capitalising on a Canberra error in their own half. A penalty goal to Penrith captain and half Jaida Staben saw the visitors take an 8-0 lead after 16 minutes. The Raiders had some opportunities in the first thirty, but errors continued to prove costly. Canberra finally struck back in the 25th minute, with a good 30 metre run from Lara Cosgrove delivering four points.



Cosgrove was back in the action three minutes into the second half, scoring a try in the corner. She completed a hat trick in the 46th minute, making a break on the edge from 70 metres out, and going all the way. Three minutes later, a great break up the middle from prop Claudia Finau, created an opportunity for fullback Elise Simpson. She crossed under the posts.

Raiders winger Jade Harding scored what was probably the try of the match in the 53rd minute. Second rower Heidi Brownlie picked up a loose ball mid field and charged ahead. She probably could have gone all the way herself, but offloaded to Harding when one of the Penrith chasers launched into an attempted tackle from behind. Perfect pass. A 70 metre try to Elise Simpson completed the rout, with two minutes left on the clock.

The Raiders have moved into seventh place on the ladder - and next head to Merrylands in Sydney for a clash with the Parramatta Eels. The Eels have won only once this season, a 36-0 win over the Dragons at Eric Tweedale Stadium in Round 5. They are coming off a 26-10 loss at home to the second placed Roosters. They trailed 18-0 at half time and 26-0 after 40 minutes. After Roosters centre Sharlize Campbell was sin binned in the 50th minute, the Eels scored a couple of late tries.

The Raiders lost to the Eels in a preseason trial match this year. But with three rounds of the regular season remaining and a possible finals berth on the line, Saturday’s match will be the real deal. It’s a must win for Canberra.

AT A GLANCE: The Harold Matthews Raiders had a break through victory on Saturday at Kippax, beating the Penrith Panthers, 34-28, in an absolute thriller. The Panthers made a late comeback, to level the scores with five minutes remaining. But a try to Raiders winger Kruger Roache in the 59th minute delivered the Green Machine their first win of the year. Players swarmed in on him from all over the field to celebrate.

The Panthers were the first to score in the 7th minute, through halfback Jhett Sydir. It was a little too easy. But Canberra fought back. Some good charges from the forwards laid the groundwork for a close range try to Raiders hooker Jack Leighton. He dived over from dummy half in the 13th minute. Five minutes later, more red zone pressure delivered a try to Raiders five eighth Jamie Cowling. Soon after, a great break down the grandstand touchline from Raiders winger Viliame Siale set up a try for fullback Cooper Johnston - who was backing up on the inside. Then in the 26th minute, Kruger Roache was over in the corner, after a chip and regather from Cowling. That made it three Canberra tries in the space of eight minutes.



The Raiders had a 24-6 advantage at the break. Penrith was the first team to score in the second half, but Canberra answered in style. A booming 40/20 kick provided the opportunity for a four pointer for second rower Lochie Ellard. A Cowling grubber to the in goal set it up. And the Green Machine seemed to be well in control, leading 28-10 at the 40 minute mark. A three try blitz in the space of 10 minutes allowed Penrith to level. They had all the momentum and they seemed just about impossible to stop. Somehow, the Raiders halted it and turned it. And then a Preston Smallwood pass set up Roache's last gasp match winner.

The Raiders travel to New Zealand in Round 7, for a clash with the Warriors at Pukekohe - on the southern fringe of Auckland. 2024 is the first year that the Warriors have fielded a team in this grade. The Warriors are on a three game winning streak, having lost their opening two games. They had a 26-16 win over the Steelers at Growers Stadium on Saturday. Prop Hudsyn Frost scored two of the Warriors’ five tries.

The travel will be a challenge for the Raiders, while the Warriors are in the midst of a five game run of matches at home. So they’ll be settled. The Warriors also have a good shot at making the finals. So they’ll be tough to beat. But hopefully, the Raiders can finish the regular season strongly.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders have cruised to a 44-4 win over the Penrith Panthers in very hot conditions at Raiders Belconnen on Saturday. It took until the 63rd minute for the Panthers to cross the line - the try to bench player William Herbert producing their only points of the game. The Raiders led 26-0 at the break, and they went on to score a total of seven tries.



The Panthers fielded some very big forwards, but they seemed to tire quickly - and Canberra's smaller men, halves Keahn Skipps and Ethan Alaia and hooker Xavier Cacciotti stepped and darted their way around them. Raiders prop Sam Hyne was the first to cross in the 9th minute. Cacciotti has trademarked the close range try from dummy half, and he pulled one of those out of the bag of tricks. Alaia and Skipps followed up with their own tries. Fullback Brayden Darmody was kicking goals from everywhere - and he added a penalty goal from 40 metres out, just before half time.

Second half tries to Bailey Nash, Taylor Withington and Alaia saw the Raiders hit 44 points at the 55 minute mark. The Withington try was scored after a smart kick from Skipps, which rebounded off a goal post. The match petered out from there. By then, just about everyone at the ground had had enough of the heat. Overall, however, it was a wonderful win.

The Raiders next travel to Auckland - more accurately Growers Stadium at Pukekohe, on the far southern outskirts of Auckland. Both the Raiders and Warriors have a 3 and 3 record in 2024. They are two of four teams that are one competition point adrift of the sixth placed Bulldogs. With three rounds left in the regular season, both teams will be desperate to win - so as to keep themselves in the race for the finals. The Raiders will also be keen to rack up some good winning margins, so as to address their negative points differential. Points difference could prove to be crucial come season's end.

The Raiders and Warriors have met in this grade only once before - a game won by Canberra in the pandemic affected 2020 season. The Warriors re-entered the SG Ball Cup last year, but were not drawn to play the Green Machine.

MATCH REPORT: Colts to face Tigers in Laurie Daley Cup final

The Laurie Daley Cup will have a new club name engraved on it in 2024 after the Monaro Colts and Northern Rivers Tigers won through to the Grand Final next Sunday at Cessnock.

For the Colts in Saturday’s first semi-final it was sweet revenge beating the Central Coast as they had lost 14-0 to the Roosters in Round One – their only loss this year. But Monaro may not be at full-strength for the Grand Final with two players placed on report for dangerous tackles – prop Jesse Milin and halfback Jonah Anderson.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders were defeated 30-12 by the Parramatta Eels in Round 7 of the Tarsha Gale Cup in Sydney on Saturday. The Raiders were first to score through prop Claudia Finau in just the third minute, but the Eels quickly took control. They scored four first half tries, taking a 20-6 lead to the break. Parramatta went to a 20 point lead at the 40 minute mark, when bench player, Keely Stevens crossed. It took until the 55th minute for the Raiders to answer with a 90 metre try to fullback Elise Simpson. It was a consolation only by that stage. A try to Eels centre Caitlin Peadon rounded out the victory for the home team.



The Raiders remain in seventh place on the ladder, three competition points adrift of the sixth placed Knights. That means their finals chances are fading fast - and Canberra's two remaining matches of the regular season are "must wins". In Round 8, the Raiders travel to southern Sydney for a clash with St George. The Dragons are last on the ladder and winless in 2024. In fact, they're on a 10 game losing streak, having not won since Round 4 last year. They have conceded more than 50 points four times this year - and more than 60 points twice. They are coming off a 62-0 defeat against the Illawarra Steelers on Saturday at Kogarah Jubilee. They conceded 12 tries, seven in the first half.

AT A GLANCE: The Harold Matthews Raiders lost, 26-10, to the Warriors on their Round 7 trip to New Zealand. Canberra prop and captain, Zildjian Tafili opened the scoring in the fourth minute. He just crashed over from close range. But Warriors tries to hooker Kaawyn Patterson and centre Siale Pahulu saw the home team take a 10-6 lead to the break. Raiders winger Kruger Roache struck back in the second half, scoring in the corner. However, the Warriors were mostly in control, scoring a total of five tries.



The Raiders' have fallen to 15th place on the competition ladder, and next meet the 13th placed Dragons in Sydney. Canberra's finals chances are long gone, but they will want to finish the season well - starting next Sunday. The Dragons have recently recorded losses against the the Roosters (46-16) and Steelers (28-4). Saturday's loss to Illawarra saw the Dragons concede six straight tries, before Dragons winger Ahmad Assaad posted a late consolation try.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders have kept themselves in contention for the SG Ball finals, defeating the Warriors, 18-14, at Pukekohe, New Zealand on Sunday. It was a tight affair, with the two teams heading into half time at six all. Second rower Mahonri Tiotala scored the Raiders' only try of the first half. The Warriors took a 14-6 lead after producing two tries early in the second half - to second rower Kayliss Fatialofa and winger Sio Kali. But tries to Canberra prop Samuel Hyne and hooker Xavier Cacciotti saw the Green Machine come from behind to secure a much needed four point victory.



The Raiders have risen to eighth place on the competition ladder, and just need to keep winning if they are to have a chance of playing finals football. Their assignment this week - the third placed Dragons in Sydney - won't be easy. But the Dragons have only one more win than the Raiders this season. And Canberra's recent form line is slightly stronger. They have lost only once in their past five matches - a narrow defeat at the hands of the Magpies (20-18) in Round 5. The Dragons recorded an 18-4 win over the Steelers in Round 7 on Saturday. All four of their tries were scored by their outside backs, with winger Zac Nachar getting a double.

Monaro Colts aiming for first Laurie Daley Cup premiership

The Monaro Colts’ Laurie Daley Cup side come into this Sunday’s Grand Final against the Northern Tigers with plenty of confidence after finishing first in their pool and securing a comfortable semi-final win against a strong Central Coast outfit. The Colts play without one of their key forwards, prop Jesse Milin, who was handed a suspension for a lifting tackle.

"We have the next man up mentality," said head coach Brendan Bradley. "We’re up against it, the boys know that, but we’ll lift".
