They had the bye to put that behind them in Round 4. The Magpies opened their season with two wins - against the Storm (44-22) and Knights (18-16). And on Sunday, they produced a big, 40-12 win over the North Sydney Bears at Kenthurst. It was comprehensive, with the Magpies scoring seven tries to three. The victory has seen the Western Suburbs outfit climb to second place on the ladder. Tough assignment for the team in green.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders produced a 30-20 victory over the Canterbury Bulldogs at Seiffert Oval on Sunday. The scores were closer than they should have been, after the Raiders took a 30-4 lead with just under 25 minutes left on the clock. The Bulldogs scored the final three tries of the game, two to winger Hamish Wilson and one to benchie Bailey Myers. The game was played in hot conditions, but the Raiders will not be able to afford that late fade too often.

The Raiders were the better team for much of the first half, but the Dogs were the first to score, through winger Chelden Hayward, after a kick ahead on the last. Canberra scored two tries in the space of five minutes, late in the first half. Second rower Mahonri Tiotala crossed in the 28th minute, while a scoot from dummy half produced a trademark try for hooker Xavier Cacciotti. Canberra took a 12-4 lead to the break.

Canberra was quick out of the blocks in the second half, with No. 14 Taylor Withington scoring near the posts in the 37th minute. Soon after, a great kick from half Keahn Skipps set up five eighth Ethan Alaia for a four pointer, while Mark Tuialii barged over in the 47th minute. Canberra had built an unassailable lead by that point.

The Raiders' opponents this week the Magpies, posted a 48-6 win over the North Sydney Bears at Kenthurst in Round 4. That meant the Bears are still winless in 2024, at the bottom of the ladder.

There is not a lot between these teams in terms of form, but the Magpies will be favoured. Canberra must win to stay in the race. They can do it. They just need to stay on their current path - and concentrate for the entire match.

Season record: Raiders 2 and 2 (10th, -44)
Magpies 2 and 1, 1 drawn (6th, +56)

Will need to work on closing out games instead of holding the lead but good win nonetheless. It was Alaia that scored from the Skipps kick.

Canberra Raiders further extend female Pathway Program

The Canberra Raiders have continued their commitment to the growth of women’s rugby league in the local region, with the addition of an under 15s development squad. This follows on from the success of the creation of the club’s under 17s female pathway program late last year. Raiders NRLW coach Darrin Borthwick is excited at the prospect of adding another age group to the female pathway at the Raiders.

“After establishing our Under 17s elite squad, we felt that we needed the same in our 15s space. That’s another part of our pathway that we felt we were missing and we are very keen and eager to see that squad come together,” Borthwick said.

AT A GLANCE: The Canberra Raiders suffered an 18-12 defeat at the hands of the Wests Tigers at Kirkham Oval, Camden on Saturday. The Tigers shot out to an 8-0 lead, after just six minutes. And while five eighth Imojean Vea struck back in the 19th minute, a try to Tigers centre Abbie Hamilton ensured that the home team would go to the break with a 12-6 lead. Six minutes into the second half, the Tigers went further ahead, courtesy of a try to lock and captain Claudia Brown. Raiders benchie, Lola Fletcher scored with 10 minutes remaining, but that was not enough.

The Raiders' opponents this week, the Penrith Panthers, are coming off two huge defeats. In Round 3, they lost 72-4 to the Bulldogs. They then fell to the Roosters, 58-0, the following week. The Panthers at least have had an opportunity to re-set during their Round 5 bye.

18. Cedric Peti Tafola 20. Preston Talamaivao 23. Caleb Wright

AT A GLANCE: The Harold Matthews Raiders remain winless in season 2024, after they were defeated, 36-12, by the Western Suburbs Magpies at Camden in Round 5. The Magpies led 18-6 at half time, with Raiders second rower Lochie Ellard getting a four pointer just before the break. The Raiders drew within six points two minutes into the second half, courtesy of a great long range try to fullback Cooper Johnston. But it was all the Magpies after that.

Canberra's opponents this week, the Panthers, suffered two big losses in a row in Rounds 3 and 4 - to the Bulldogs (46-10) and Roosters (40-16). But they bounced back on Saturday, beating the Steelers, 30-12, at Windsor Sports Complex. Fullback Jayden Carter and five eighth Cameron Bamblett both bagged doubles.

The Panthers finished as minor premiers last year. And while things are not going quite as well for them in 2024, they will be an tough assignment for the Green Machine this weekend.

AT A GLANCE: A disrupted Raiders outfit produced a second half comeback against the Western Suburbs Magpies, scoring three tries in the final 25 minutes. But it was not enough, with the Green Machine just falling short in the 20-18 defeat.

There were six late changes to the Canberra starting line up and that had an impact. The Magpies led 14-0 at half time. Tries to hooker Xavier Cacciotti and five eighth Ethan Alaia brought Canberra right back into the game at the 55 minute mark. Both were the result of quick scoots from dummy half. But a converted try to Magpies winger Daniel Waqa in the 63rd minute made things safe for the home team. A try to bustling Canberra forward, Mathias Tomuli-Ah-Khoi right on full time came too late. The loss has seen the Raiders drop to 12th on the ladder - and they'll need to have a run of wins in the final four rounds of the regular season if they're to play finals.

The Penrith Panthers produced a 24-16 victory over the Illawarra Steelers on Saturday at Windsor - their second of the year so far. Penrith led 18-6 at half time, but two second half tries for the Steelers saw them trail by just two points after 55 minutes. A try to Penrith prop Judah Galuvau in the 60th minute proved to be the difference.

These two teams finished first and second on the ladder last year. But both have been a bit off the pace in 2024. This is a game that the Raiders must win - and can win. They've got a good chance in this one, at home.

Season record: Raiders 2 and 3 (12th, -46)

Team news: Keahn Skipps returns to the side at halfback, replacing Sam Chapman. Chapman moves to the bench. Lekani Mpaso is also back on the wing, with Dakai Bolatagici dropping out of the squad. Elvis Nauer-Wood and Samuel Hyne return as the starting props, with Owen Hromow moving back to lock and Thomas Lunney to the bench. Regular second rower Mahonri Tiotala is back and will partner Jordan Uta. Taylor Withington returns to the bench.

13th min TRY RAIDERS to Jack Leighton, dives over from dummy half from close range. The prop drew in four defenders in the preceding tackle, so there was plenty of traffic. Converted Jack Milne from close to the posts.
