39th min FORCED LINE DROP OUT conceded by the Raiders. The Raiders produce a short drop out, take the Bears player over the sideline, but are penalised for doing so.

The Bears drop the ball, the Raiders get a penalty, Cook fails to find touch.

HALF TIME

North Sydney Bears 14
Canberra Raiders 12

That score line really doesn't reflect the run of play in the first half.

41st min PENALTY BEARS against Michael Asomua, another soft one, for a "crusher".

44th min TRY BEARS to Allan Fitzgibbon, after a set restart. It was a good pass from Hayman to his winger. But the Raiders are not getting any luck with the officiating in this match. Kieran lHayman converts, it hits the crossbar and goes over.

66th min PENALTY BEARS for an obstruction. Hola ran as a decoy, and knocked over some Bears mid field. They wouldn't have got to Noah Martin who crossed out wide. Now another penalty to the Bears for high contact. They attack from 35 metres out.

68th min The Raiders hang on, but time is running out. They trail by eight. Now a penalty to the Raiders. And Mitch Spencer fails to correctly play the ball, almost instantly. Too many errors from Canberra in this half.

Some of the Raiders bigger names like Emre Guler and Nick Cotric have done little to stamp their authority on the proceedings. No urgency from Guler, awfully slow play the balls. It is a disappointing second half.

78th min Bears kick goes dead, seven tackle set for Canberra.

MATCH REPORT: Bears better Raiders in Sunday afternoon clash

After finding themselves down 12-2 early in their Round 7 clash with the Canberra Raiders, the Bears have produced three unanswered tries to run out 20-12 winners at North Sydney Oval on Sunday.

After some strong opening sets from both sides, Bear second rower Riley Meyn was collected high by his opposing number in Noah Martin in front of the posts. The Bears decided to open their account early, taking a 2-0 lead.

A mix up off of the kick off gifted Canberra a scrum from 20 metres out. The visitors made the most of their first attacking set when forward Luke Webley poured through a gaping hole to score the first try of the match in the 8th minute.

Very meek performance. I don’t think anyone did their first grade chances any good.

I did think Martin looked good when he wasnt making mistakes and his involvement was strong.

He and Cook were very good in the first half, no one was good in the second. Trevilyan came on much earlier than usual. So Woolford was playing a back rower sort of role after that.

Last round: The Canberra Raiders have suffered back to back losses in NSW Cup - falling to the Bears, 20-12, at North Sydney Oval on Sunday. The Raiders were dominant for the first 30 minutes of the match, with Zac Woolford and Adam Cook calling the shots. The Bears successfully took an early shot at penalty goal. But Canberra scored the first two tries, and they came easily. In the 9th minute, Cook put back rower Luke Webley into a gap for a short range try. Mitch Spencer, who was switched late to centre, followed up in the 15th minute. It was the result of a good shift to the right, with Manaia Waitere getting the try assist.

The Raiders' attack was fluid, but the North Sydney defence was also seriously lacking in intensity. Late in the first half, the Bears were able to drag themselves back into the contest - on the back of a strong flow of penalties. First, fullback Jake Toby put in a very good kick ahead for his winger, Allan Fitzgibbon, and sent him on his way to the try line. Five minutes later, Ben Talty crossed - after an incorrect penalty was awarded against Raiders fullback Albert Hopoate for a strip. It allowed the Bears to go to the half time break with an unlikely 14-12 lead.

Fitzgibbon scored his second try early in the second half, after centre Matt Stimson helped find some space on the left edge. That try, too, was set up by an early penalty to the Bears - and the second half unfortunately descended into a scrappy affair, with plenty more penalties and errors. Neither team could score after the 45 minute mark. The Raiders looked nothing like the side that had turned out in the first half. They produced a lot of unforced errors and often showed a lack of urgency in the play the ball.

The Raiders side has been disrupted, with strong performers like Trey Mooney and Chevy Stewart promoted to first grade in the past couple of weeks. But players and coach will be disappointed with how they let the game against the Bears get away from them.

The Bears ended with a 55 per cent share of possession - and almost six more minutes with the ball - after being awarded 12 penalties, compared with six for the Raiders. The Bears made more running metres (1688-1470) and one more line break (3-2) than the Raiders. Despite that, Canberra made more metres per set (42-38) and made more tackle breaks (31-26). They also had the better effective tackle rate (92 per cent, compared with 89 per cent for the Bears). Despite having the bigger defensive workload (Raiders 341 tackles made, Bears 294), Canberra missed fewer tackles than North Sydney (26-31).

Albert Hopoate (197) led the way in running metres for the Raiders, followed by Michael Asomua (151), Emre Guler (151), Peter Hola (140) and Hohepa Puru (137). Hohepa Puru (52) topped the tackle count, ahead of Emre Guler (38), Zac Woolford (38) and Noah Martin (38). Michael Asomua made seven tackle breaks, while Adam Cook and Manaia Waitere both posted a try assist.

This round: The Raiders have fallen to fifth place on the ladder. The first placed Panthers are four competition points clear of the chasers - but the Raiders are just one competition point behind the other teams in the top four - the Bears, Rabbitohs and Bulldogs. Their opponent this week, the Jets, are coming off a 14-10 loss to the Sea Eagles at Henson Park on Saturday. They have also had a recent loss to the Rabbitohs (24-12) at Stadium Australia.

The two teams met just a month ago - when they fought out a 28 all draw at Henson Park. That was definitely a match the Raiders should have won, after they led 28-16 at the 65 minute mark. However, they conceded two late tries, in the space of just four minutes - and their lead evaporated.

Team news: The Raiders are unchanged from the line up that took to the field against the Bears last week.

2024 season record: Raiders: 4 and 2, 1 draw (5th, +102)
Jets: 2 and 3, 1 draw (8th, -7)
Form: Raiders: WDWLL
Jets: WWDLL
Recent meetings: 2024 Round 4 Raiders 28 drew Jets 28 at Henson Park

Just added in the statistics from yesterday into the review of yesterday's game. It's tough to win a game with the penalty count running two to one against you. The Bears got 12 penalties in all, the Raiders six. Puru 52 tackles! Better metres for Hopoate, Guler and Hola than my obviously flawed eye test.

What was your overall impression of the Raiders performance, GE?
The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

36th min TRY RAIDERS to Nick Cotric, gets the break out wide and runs it around. This half of football has been fairly clunky from both sides. No surprise, for the Raiders I guess given all the changes. But play has repeatedly broken down due to errors and poor options. Conversion Adam Cook.
