Re: 2023 Week 3 Pacific Championships - Teams and Game Day
The Jillaroos and Kiwi Ferns about to head out onto the field in Melbourne. They walk out side by side and line up for the national anthems. Very small crowd at present.
Simaima Taufa the Raiders to watch in the Jillaroos, while Apii Nicholls and Ash Quinlan are the Canberra reps in the Kiwi Ferns.
Now for the haka from the Kiwis. The Jillaroos decide to advance in a line on the Kiwi Ferns. Emotional reactions from a lot of the players.
Now for the game.

I am not quite sure what it is, but Tarsha Gale really is one of the most annoying commentators in the game. The comments rarely show any insight for a start. Then every sentence is punctuated by several exclamation marks.

20th min TRY AUSTRALIA to Tamika Upton. Good run and offload from Olivia Kernick to set it up. Apii Nicholls very nearly saved the try. And now the bunker is checking for a knock on. And she has lost it in the tackle. Nicholls, great try saver in the end. NO TRY.

Here's something you may not know. Jillaroos coach Brad Donald was a junior representative coach for the Canberra Raiders for five years from 2005, finishing up as the coach of the SG Ball side. He left when recruited by the Queensland Rugby League in 2010 and found his way into coaching women's rugby league in Queensland.

With three minutes to half time, Australia throws the ball out over the sideline. The Jillaroos have been completely dominant, but their defence has been remarkable.

35th min TRY NEW ZEALAND from Mele Hufanga. The Kiwi Ferns got a one on one steal from Brigginshaw, and then the big centre charged over from 10 metres out on the last tackle. McGregor converts.
Australian Jillaroos 6
New Zealand Kiwi Ferns 6
HALF TIME
Australia has had 55 per cent of the ball and 70 per cent of the territory, so the score line is a huge bonus for the Kiwi Ferns.

41st min TRY NEW ZEALAND to Apii Nicholls! That was a great set from the Kiwi Ferns, which commenced with an intercept right on their own line. The bunker is checking for obstruction and that is a very tough call. Brigginshaw engaged, defensive choice. It's just not right. NO TRY.

63rd min TRY NEW ZEALAND to the winger Leianne Tufuga in the corner, set up with a brilliant pass from Apii Nicholls. She must be the player the match. Must be. McGregor converts from the sideline. Hit the top of the cross bar and goes over.
New Zealand 12-6
If the Kiwi Ferns can win this, they really will be deserved winners.

FULL TIME
New Zealand Kiwi Ferns 12
Australian Jillaroos 6
Quite a stunning match and a stunning performance from New Zealand. Apii Nicholls absolutely outstanding. She was surely the player of the match. Fantastic game.
MATCH REPORT: Defensive masterclass sees Kiwi Ferns end their Jillaroos drought
A courageous defensive performance led the Kiwi Ferns to their first victory over Australia in seven years on Saturday afternoon, as they edged past the world champions 12-6 in Melbourne.
With seven minutes to play in a match which saw them spend long periods camped on their own line and enjoy few opportunities in attacking territory, Leianne Tufuga scored her first try at Test level to end New Zealand's seven-game winless streak against their trans-Tasman neighbours.
