Doubt this would have been done if South’s were not playing the season opener in LV and did not just lose 2 outside backs.

100% South’s are missing Jack, Graham, Munro, Izzac Thomson(denied VISA) and possibly Walker from their back line.

It’s not a decision against us, it’s about the Bunnies and game in LV

Terrible precedent if that's the case. If they are truly that desperate for players then they should make him serve the full suspension but delay it one round.

It is the right decision then. But if you are going to bend the rules, why not be lenient on Kris too?

What kind of precedent does that set? Players can come back early from suspension if a team has some injuries and the game is a high profile one.

If that’s the case and the NRL don’t want rep games to count as it unfairly helps rep level players, let them play in the rep games. If you’re stopping them from playing in the rep games it should count as a game off their suspension.

exactly or at the least keep it to origin/test.

NRL stands firm on Raider's Round 1 ban despite inconsistencies

Sebastian Kris's Round 1 ban is set to stand, leaving the Canberra Raiders fuming about favourable treatment given to South Sydney's Jacob Gagai. Gagai has been allowed to count the 2024 All Stars game to a suspension, but Kris has been denied equivalent treatment. One justification given for denying Kris’s application was that he’d never played All Stars before, but neither has Gagai. It appears the NRL also felt the seriousness of Kris's charge was a distinguishing factor.

So, it seems Jacob Gagai was selected for the Maori team in error, and was in camp for two days before it was realised he was under suspension. (Surely he and the Rabbitohs knew.) So this is said to be definitive evidence he’d been picked.

Meanwhile it was considered there was no definitive evidence that Kris would be picked. That’s despite a letter signed by Indigenous coach Ronald Griffiths and team manager Gavin Badger, saying Kris would be picked if available… and had been picked in 2023 too (didn’t play due to a shoulder injury). And remember, Kyle Laybutt was in the Indigenous team.

Can you seriously believe this stuff? But that’s the feeble excuse. Seems the Raiders are still hoping the NRL will reconsider. But let’s not hold our breath.

I suspect, that whilst the Raiders are hopeful of that outcome, they are probably resigned to him not playing round 1. I suspect their real reasons are:

1)Firmly and loudly supporting Kris - both behind the scenes and in the media
2)Continue to establish a reputation as being willing to call the NRL out on their hypocrisy - with the eventual hope they'll do it less to us cause we're just painful

I am ok with both those reasons

Seems pretty absurd, there really ought to be written rules to govern this.
It either counts and you are required to have x,y,z as evidence (i would suggest previous selection, and written advice from the coach and manager that you would be selected if available is a reasonable standard to set on that front) to have it count towards your suspension

or it doesnt count and you're free to play... for this event given the limited options already based on SC, i think it would be easier to simply say this game is a celebration of the game and these cultures. Suspensions dont count and everyone who fits the SC is eligable to be selected and play

It's absurd to deny the player the opportunity to play and yet not count it towards his suspension. Cant have it both ways. Thought i expect that's what will occur.

It’s just extraordinary. The NRL has basically said to Seb Kris… we banned you for five games, but here’s another one week ban because you want to play for the Indigenous team. It’s an absolute disgrace what’s happening here. It’s called the NRL judiciary, but there’s no justice in this decision.

Sign "Kris Sebastian" to a second tier deal and run him out in round 1. It would be no less ridiculous than the dribble emanating from NRL HQ.

Quite mind boggling how the NRL continues to outdo itself on these kind of things. There's zero logic behind this. If one decision is correct then the other one has to be wrong.

actually, interesting side note. JWH from the Roosters is in exactly the same boat as Kris. (the All-Stars match doesn't count, even though he's been selected before, and would have been selected this time) So there is, oddly, consistency in the NRL's inconsistent decision making.

Roosters are now complaining as well so that means we actually might have a chance of a positive outcome - no chance if it was just us but now that Uncle Nick and Trent are on the case the NRL may come down in our favor.

Roosters complaining will certainly get attention. Otherwise would just written off as Ricky whinging again.

The optics are bad for the NRL as their convoluted explanations don't make much sense to your average punter.

Surely they make no sense to anyone. Let’s face it. It’s V’landys shooting from the hip again. Souths need a player for Vegas. And that’s the only real distinguishing feature. There was absolutely no sense in the original decision, which gave an extra ban to Seb and JWH and allowed Wighton to count the game to his ban for biting. The inconsistencies are downright ridiculous now.

I still think it's ridiculous that suspensions can count against hypothetical representative games. As gerg said, all this does is reward the rep players.

It should be the other way around IMO. Suspensions don't count against rep games, and if you miss Origins or Tests because of suspensions, then tough ****. The onus should be on representative players to be better anyway.

Trial matches and exhibition games like the All-Stars should be exempt though. Seb Kris should be able to play in all of them, but shouldn't be allowed back until Round 5.

Losing a representative game is an even bigger penalty to the player. If an NRL ban can only be served in an NRL game, this year that’d mean a one game ban at the end of the season is effectively a five game ban. But only for rep players. How is that justice?

Well why even serve bans in rep matches? Seb Kris should've been able to play the test series and the All-Stars match and trials, and then he's banned from NRL until Round 5.

That seems like a fair enough approach to me, better than this current **** show.

What I want to know is why the letter from Indigenous coach Ronald Griffiths and team manager Gavin Badger wasn't regarded as probative evidence that Kris would have been picked. What other evidence do you need ? He would have, as a minimum, made the bench. Conversely, the letter from Michael Maguire stating that he would have been picked for NZ was accepted. That's another inconsistency in itself.

It also cannot be right that PVL in his unfettered discretion gives his blessing to the Souths guy to play but there are no avenues for teams like us to challenge the decision from the NRL judiciary chairman.

'He was definitely being considered for selection': Indigenous coach backs Kris's All Star claim

The Indigenous All Stars coach has given Sebastian Kris a round-one boost by declaring he was in his selection calculations. But the Canberra Raiders were internally pessimistic on Tuesday the NRL would overturn their decision to prevent Kris from counting the All Stars game towards his suspension.

"He was definitely being considered for selection," Ronald Griffiths said. "I'm really unsure why [the NRL] would think like that.

I thought his potential selection was confirmed?

They said he was been considered to play and imply he very likely would've been selected and definitely would've played last year. Griffiths says he doesn't understand why the NRL would think he wasn't going to get selected.

It's really stretching the bounds of credibility to suggest Kyle Laybutt, who hasn't played in the NRL for 6 years, would've ended up playing ahead of him.

Griffiths and Badger signed a letter indicating Kris was part of their plans this year and was selected last year. The NRL told the Indigenous team management Kris couldn’t play before they finalised the team. It’s a bit hard for him to say more than Kris would have been considered, given that is effectively saying to one player, ex post, that they wouldn’t have been selected (without specifying who it is… but it’s probably the player who hasn’t played NRL since 2018). The story says: “Griffiths was taken aback when told the NRL judiciary hadn't considered the letter to be sufficient evidence Kris would play.”

Based on the NRL’s new interpretation for suspensions we better start naming Corey Horsburgh in the NRL first 17 on Team List Tuesday or he’ll never use up his suspended weeks.

I can hear another convoluted and stage managed Annesley media conference “well we just didn’t know if Ricky was going to name Horsburgh for the game, so we therefore can’t count that game against his suspension period”.

Gotcha. Thanks for that clarification.
The final line is pretty clear. He was going to play. Its hard to imagine how the NRL have **** this up so badly. It's such a dumb thing to stub your toe on.
