Newcastle Knights sign Canberra Raiders back James Schiller
Newcastle Knights sign Canberra Raiders back James Schiller
Newcastle have continued their roster tug-of-war with Canberra by signing talented winger James Schiller to a three-year deal. Off-contact at the end of this season, Schiller has proven a strong contributor for the Raiders so far this season, scoring five tries in four games.
The 22-year-old broke the news to his Raiders teammates on Wednesday. It’s understood the lure to play centre at the Knights was a contributing factor behind Schiller’s decision to quit Canberra.

NRL rival poaches Raiders try-scoring star
The Newcastle Knights are close to announcing the signing of James Schiller after agreeing to terms with the young Canberra Raiders flyer. It is understood Schiller has informed Raiders coach Ricky Stuart that he has accepted Newcastle's offer to join them next year, on a deal for at least the following two seasons.
As well as outbidding Canberra financially, it is understood that Knights management have indicated to Schiller that he will be given an opportunity to push for a spot in the centres. Newcastle have deliberately left a vacancy on this year's roster in the hope that they might be able to sign an outside back mid-season, but it is considered highly unlikely the Raiders will consider granting an early release for Schiller.

Would rather have kept in but with Asomua being promoted, can’t keep them all

Seriously? I didn’t even realise he was off contract

Yeah but I reckon Schiller’s ceiling is high. Probably higher than Asomua’s from what I’ve seen.
And I’d have hoped the promise of Rapa’s spot from next season would’ve been enough.
But maybe the Knights offered big money.

Who has gone to the knights recently and excelled?
Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2024
Any source on the Schiller news? He is a good fit for the Knights and it's probably the right move with Asomua coming through.
I'd assume Cotric sticks around now.

Yeah I would drop him asap - too many defensive issues that he needs time to develop
Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2024
Depends on your definition of “gone to”, “recently”, and “excelled”. Does Ponga count?

Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2024
I guess it makes sense, he should be a centre and playing centre. We can't afford him in that sense. Still very disappointing, I love his speed

Completely disagreeRuben Daley wrote: ↑April 17, 2024, 2:38 pm Yeah but I reckon Schiller’s ceiling is high. Probably higher than Asomua’s from what I’ve seen.
Reckon Asomua’s ceiling is significantly higher
More well rounded player. But we’ll see!
Schiller outside of Ponga should be a fun time. Better player than Jenkins and Tuala imo

I really think/thought one of Morkos or Schiller would become an elite outside back. Hopefully Morkos comes back next year.

Ugh, that really sucks.
Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2024
Plenty of their signings have gone ok. Ponga obviously, Leo Thompson, Dom Young. Frizzell has been good. Kai Pearce-Paul looks pretty good as well.
Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2024
Surely we had cash to spare to keep him. Unless they’ve offered him crazy money

But Asomua is not a particularly fast player, that's my impression is that correct?Botman wrote: ↑April 17, 2024, 2:43 pmCompletely disagreeRuben Daley wrote: ↑April 17, 2024, 2:38 pm Yeah but I reckon Schiller’s ceiling is high. Probably higher than Asomua’s from what I’ve seen.

I liked the speed and enjoyed watching us burn up the sideline
Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2024
Cotric and Hoppa would be cheering. Their path back to firsts just got a whole lot easier

But he’s also not slow. He’s fast enough to finish imo
Stylistically very similar imo to Brian To’o more than Savage
Good balance between the two and Chevy at fullback

Haha. I figured you’d say that and you’ve seen more of Asomua than me. The club appears to agree too, if the rumour is true.Botman wrote: ↑April 17, 2024, 2:43 pmCompletely disagreeRuben Daley wrote: ↑April 17, 2024, 2:38 pm Yeah but I reckon Schiller’s ceiling is high. And given Schiller seems to be gone, I hope you’re all right.
I reckon Schiller will score some tries for the Knights and he might be there to take Gagai’s centre spot next year. Good luck to him.
Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2024
Letting him go - are we thinking it’s purely down to money, other players being preferred, or other issues (insert unfounded character assassination here).

Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2024
There is a lot of talent coming through the juniors but unlike last year if they lose a few of these emerging squad players there isn't a lot busting the door down at the moment. Next winger up after Asomua is Stuart and from what I have seen of Esera and Wataire they aren't screaming NRL player yet.
I think they will need to get active in the market at some point even if it's for depth.

Re: Raiders player signing speculation 2024
He probably got a good 3 year offer to play regular NRL, maybe at Center with Gagai on the way out soon, so I reckon money and opportunity. Jack Hetherington is his cousin so maybe that was a factor as well.
He had a deal on the table from the Raiders so I don't think that it was "other issues".

watch how all the schiller fans drop off him now.

Weird we've let him go while being in negotiations with Crotic. Weird is an understatement.

Re: James Schiller signs 3 year deal with Newcastle Knights
We didn’t let him go - he got a three year deal to play centre for more money. Good player, would have preferred him to stay over Hopa (and potentially Cotric if he re-signs) but we can’t keep them all.
Re: James Schiller signs 3 year deal with Newcastle Knights
This sucks.
Schiller is no world beater but gee if this means any more first grade games for Cotric and Hopoate, it’s a rubbish move

He's still in front of Hoppa but you'd have to think Cotric now comes back in.
Why continue to develop a player , same with Sanders .
Release him now if we can secure another player.
I'm disappointed he is leaving. I wish him the best but it's next man up
